How I rigged my Milk Crates

Post by Mythman »

I fish a lot offshore and re-entering the surf, you stand a chance of flipping over …….I have turtled on three occasions or more. I got tired of losing pliers and/or anything heavy so I rigged my milk crates ( I carry two in my X-Factor tank well) with lids that hold everything in, no mater what.

I, also, fixed my milk crates so they would sit above any water that may get into the tank well.

Here is my approach to it:

Keeping the milk crates up out of any water

I strapped pvc pipe wrapped with pipe insulation on the bottom of my milk crates (without the pvc pipe inside the pipe insulation will flatten out).

This is a bottom picture.

Here is how it sits in my tank well, as you can see there is plenty of room for water to drain without getting everything wet, under most conditions.

Here are my milk crate lids: I use ply wood and brass hinges and screws.

I just drilled a hole and use a bunge cord to latch it shut.

Here is the lid open.

I do not like to use the long bunge cord that came with the yak to strap every thing in so I use individual short bunges at each corner.

I have found that this system works best for me.

not to take away from this great post..
what is that little contraption you have on the anchor trolly to keep the line in place.. where did you get it and what is it called..

again.. I will rig my crate as you have.. but i will be using the cutting board material with the brass hinges you have.. I like that..

thanx for the post..

I have (had) a similar set up with the rod holders. BUT..when I turtled in shallow water the nylon ties were broken. Since then I swithced to steel straps and nut/bolt combo. IMO, those nylon ties won't last. Maybe some of the heavier ones??

Well Z-man, I don't know. Actually that isn't my anchor trolley but my rudder lines. It came that way when I bought it.

Here is a pic of my anchor trolley system (not the best pic) but I used a deck loop to keep my bottom line in place (those are my crates prior to lids)

oh.. i sea ...

I too have my anchor trolly as you have xcept no pullys..
i have purchased them and gettin ready to rig it..

i sea you dont use bungie to secure your pullys..

I have been debating whether to put some or not.. (bugie shock cord)

as have seen an read some good safety reasons.. I just might try it if I dont like it then take it off and go back to the way You have it..

thanx for the info Mythman

I use a shock bunge, but it is on my anchor rope and the pic you see is when I released the anchor to catch the fish. I believe in shock bunge's!!!!

Not a problem Z-man, that is why we have this section of the forum. Most of my rigging comes from actual experience and what works best for me. I know 1000 ways not to do it......because I have done most of them.

This is my basic anchor line rig, I put a large crab float betweet the bunge and anchor trolley when fishing btb.

Hope this helps, man! Maybe we will meet on the water some day!!

O.K. I don't have a yak yet but when I do I'll be fishing some of the worse water in Texas in terms of wind & waves...........why is the bungee important on the line or at the ends of the trolley system? Sorry to Hi-jack but I also like the lid on the crates BTW :D

The bunge cords absorb the pull on the anchor rope from waves and wind. Out past the surf, sometimes you are fishing in 3-5 ft swells and there can be some pretty good slamming against your yak by those waves. The bunges help take the shock out of them.

If you are going to fish rough water, you need to try the bunge shock absorber on your anchor rope......I think you will like it!
