New Bass Yaks motor kit for Ascend FS128T
i'm sure i'm not the only one that owns the Ascend FS128T on here but I was browsing around on the interweb and went to Bass Yaks website and they now offer a motor kit for the 128T. http://bassyaks.com/new-stuff/
one of you fellow owners should purchase the kit and let me know how it performs
I tried calling Bass Yaks to get some information on the kit. my only concern is how to steer being that the kayak isn't molded for rudder controls.
just thought i'd share

He sells pedals, also. I added them to a OK Mailbu2 XL with no problem.
I'm on my second BassYaks setup and enjoy them immensely !

I know that they sell the pedals as well, my only concern was where the control cables ran. on kayaks that are pre-made to accept a rudder, they have channels for the control cables to run from the rudder to the foot pedals. do the cables just run through the hull or what?USN 06 wrote:He sells pedals, also. I went to bass pro last Friday to buy then I realized how big it was in person, it reminds me of a pro angler without the peddle drive so I changed my mind. That thing has to be a beast to paddle , I see why you would want a motor...

in all honesty, it really isn't too hard to paddle. granted you aren't going to win any races on the water, I manage to keep a great pace without breaking a sweat.Flats stalker wrote:I went to bass pro last Friday to buy then I realized how big it was in person, it reminds me of a pro angler without the peddle drive so I changed my mind. i'm not 100% sold on using a motor yet. I just saw today that these kits were available for this kayak and was just passing on information to fellow 128t owners. I have no problem with paddling it. if a company was to develop a rudder kit for it, that would be awesome haha

I have an Ascend FS128t! I think I'll just stick with the paddles, but thanks for the info. By the way, how are you liking the FS?

Yes, the cables run through the hull, which works quite well.

its not too bad. it definitely isn't friends with the wind and I wish they made a rudder kit for it to keep it tracking straight when drifting. other than those few issues I like it for what I use it for.

I am really checking out that kayak. I went from a pelican 120 to a pescador 12', and that pescador doesn't have any room for anything. The area behind the seat stays 2" deep in water. I need more room but I'm worried that the fs128t might be too much. Is it awkward to paddle sitting that high out of the water?

It's not awkward at all. The seat has 3 different hight levels so you can have it for your style. Sitting above the deck like that is the only way to go in my opinion. It's very comfortable and you butt will never get wet. It's a win win.EastTXMedic wrote:I am really checking out that kayak. Sounds good. I hate to say it, but my pelican was a lot more functional than the pescador. It had scuppers under the seat so my butt didn't stay wet, it didn't have water coming in in the first place, and it was far more stable. The pescador does paddle a little easier, but just barely enough to tell. I like how that Ascend looks like it has plenty room for my tackle boxes and a decent size cooler.

I have the FS 128T and so far love it, its roomy and very stable. I think I'm going to stick with my paddle though. I would recomend it, not perfect but for the price it works well.

I saw ONE FS128T with a rudder. It looked awesome. I'm thinking of doing the same, because the wind really kicks my butt every time I go to the bay and fish.

It can be done but there are no kits made for the yak.TX_Yak wrote:I saw ONE FS128T with a rudder. It looked awesome. I'm thinking of doing the same, because the wind really kicks my butt every time I go to the bay and fish.
The wind is torture. The longer I have this kayak the more I wish I had something different. I'm not at all satisfied with it other than the stability.
By chance where did you see one with a rudder?

The wind is always torture,,, no matter what I'm paddling. It never seems to be at my back either.

Same here man. I normally paddle into the wind in the mor IMF thinking that it'll be at my back on the way in and that never happens. The wind always changes on me.Baitman wrote:The wind is always torture,,, no matter what I'm paddling. It never seems to be at my back either.

Wayne, you should have no concern with the steering cables, they run inside the hull and exit on the back deck as they are also used for raising the motor. You can use the foot braces that come with the kayak or upgrade to a smoother pair.
I like the deck platform but the thing is heavy, I hurt my back the first time I loaded it on my Vanagon, plus the hatches leak and have to be resealed but for the price it's a good deal.
The motor works great , but you guys are still missing the point of a motor, all designs will get you from here to there, the Bassyaks design gets the paddle out of your hands, you can fish with out throwing the paddle over the side or paddling with your forearm. You can go the whole day with out touching the paddle., You can cast the weed line with out touching the paddle, you won't get pulled into the lilly pads by the fish and losing it because the line went slack.
The rudder isn't going to make it any easier to paddle into the wind, it'll only keep your coarse.
