Is it OK to have a kayak seat higher than normal?

Post by alinux »

Think about DIYing a Kayak seat. The idea is about putting a big comfortable seat on top of it.
The problem is that it's bottom is too big to fit there, therefore it has to be raised up for about 10 inch.
Is it a problem to sit like that while paddling? or even hard to move around on a windy day?
thanks.

Well, I'm sure you'll catch more wind sitting up higher, and it'll raise your center of gravity making things a bit more "tippy." But you should give it a try and let us know how it turns out. Being higher up will make fishing better and easier too...

Your will become much more susceptible to tipping over.

That sounds like a good idea, the only thing I would be worried would be the stability. Having the seat higher would really help from your view to your comfort. I was thinking myself to put a sit like this one from gander mountain

It looks comfortable and might give it a little height.

I looked at one of those awhile back; what turned me off was the small bottom; its only 8 or 9 inches wide; look at the picture closely and you'll see what i mean-p-

The biggest thing is sitting to high will adversely affect your center of gravity making it much easier to tip over unexpectedly. I would stick with a base seat and add a Skwoosh gel pad for extra padding if needed.

Depends upon the type of Yak you have. In my Redfish 14 forget it. In my Commander 140 I sit on an old wheel chair cushion 2 inches thick and it has no effect on my stability. It is a try and see thing.
