Here's my Kayak Trailer Project.

Taking my boys out on our kayaks had always required about 2 hours of preparation to load the kayaks on my truck, load the fishing gear and run around to make sure we didn't forget anything.
Plus my 50 year old back can't take hoisting kayaks up on a truck rack anymore and my boys aren't tall enough to reach that high yet, so I decided I needed a trailer that was low enough for the boys to reach it, and easy for me to load and unload my Ultimate.

I took most of my ideas from here on TKF (Thanks to those unknowingly gave me ideas!) and I added a few of my own
I spent about a month planning the trailer. The build took about another month of evenings and weekends.

The base is a $200 Craigslist 14ft galvanized tilt jon boat trailer.
I removed the bunkboards, winch and hull rollers.
The wheel bearings are new, new fenders are from Tractor Supply Co, and the tongue wheel and new lights are from Harbor Freight.
The box is 12" high, constructed with 2x3s and 3/8" Plywood, and is covered with outdoor carpet from Lowes with Aluminum trim.
The rack is welded 1" box tube.
Access on the top of the box is for paddles and PFD's.
The rear is set up to store fishing poles, and a slide out drawer for tackle and kayak accessories.
The yaks are my boy's Tarpon 100s and my new Native Ultimate 14.5

The total cost was less than $500.

Now when we decide to go fishing or just paddling around, the trailer is already loaded, all we need to do is pull it out of the garage and go! 8)

Just got this trailer a month or two ago, I will be extending the neck 4' and adding a toolbox on the neck just ahead of the trailer bed to hold PFD's, seats, paddles etc.. while traviling instead of in the back seat or the truck.

fishingdrone wrote:Just got mine ready to roll, still a lot left to be done (add AC and DC aux power system, live well, rod tubes, etc.) Will haul 2-3 yaks on top, and one smaller one could fit in cargo area until the power system and live well goes in.

It's 6'x3' and rides on 35x17x12.5 tires (same as the jeep, and sits at the same height). Pulls like it's not even there. The tounge is adjustable by 2.5', for different length 'yaks.

Had a friend do the design and fab, and I've been adding the finishing touches.

any updated pics? i hope your adding fenders to it, you could tear up some yaks with those tires throwing up road debris. really nice fabrication though i like it a lot

Haven't done much to it lately. Still in the "to-do list" =) Hadn't considered skinning the fenders, but now you do make me think about it. Next up is to skin the cargo area with expanded steel to make it easier to carry gear (everything has to be strapped down right now, or lose it!) while still keeping the weight down.

Here's the only other pic I have right now, with it on SLP:

Here is mine. The kayak sits on PVC pipe for the time being. I wanted to lay it out and use a few times before I welded permanent risers and cross memebers. Trailer came from Tractor Supply had a new tongue made that was 3 feet longer.

I wanted to add pics of my trailer since I stumbled upon this thread when looking for ideas last spring. I live in Washington state and when I found this site, and this thread specifically, it helped me out a ton. The funny thing is, I'm moving to Corpus next month, closing on our house on Padre Island June 15th. When I found this place I had no idea I'd be living down there only a year later! Anyway, here's my simple setup. It's a harbor freight cheapo trailer, and I welded some square stock to the side, slid a larger piece over it and mounted a flat piece of steel and the yakima carriers to that. I made the tongue movable, but I need to cut a foot or two off. I'm planning on adding a coffin type box in the middle so I can carry everything inside and keep it locked, but I want it to be removable too, so I can still use it as a regular trailer to haul stuff. It was actually pretty easy to do, but I wouldn't have done it without seeing what everyone here had done before me. You guys gave me the confidence to do it myself, and some great ideas. I should say thanks to everyone, and I can't wait to get down there and be a part of your community!

I painted all the bare steel to match the harbor freight red afterwards..
