How does it tow with the honda? I've been considering a tow for my beetle, but afraid the trailers too heavy...

Re: Post your trailer!!!!
Just finished my rig. Now holds 4 yaks and a whole lot of gear!
Re: Post your trailer!!!!
Decided to go with some stout hubs and a bigger wheel and tire set up for the long haul trips.
5-4.5 hubs with a standard 1" spindle 14" wheels.
Just about finished
Got it registered and legal so I'm ready
Thinking about custom lic plates.

Recently just finished up my trailer, can't wait to hit water more often this year.
Went from this

Trailer still needs some little things here and there but it's pretty much complete

Re: Post your trailer!!!!
Hello all,
I am new here. Found your forum while looking to build a kayak trailer.
I've read this whole thread and a bunch of others pulling together ideas.
I wanted to attach a mock sketch of my build plan and see if I could get any input from experienced guys.
I do not weld, and am trying to eliminate that. Its possible I have a friend who could do mild welding on small pieces as long as I stay away from any galvanized material (I think that's poisonous to weld)
My goal is as follows:
Buy a nice reliable quality trailer that can serve as a utility trailer when needed (I'm seasonally getting mulch, occasional landscape stuff, etc), as well as carry and be a "permanent" storage rack for my kayaks.
I want the boats to live all the time on the trailer, in my back yard.
I plan to load and store them on their side edge as I understand that is the best way to store plastic boats without damage. I have 2 pungos 120 and 140.
Also, I'm buying with 13" wheels because I want to be able to run interstate speed 70-75 with it.
I will cover the whole trailer with a tarp when in the backyard.
Please see the attached. Comments welcome.

Re: Post your trailer!!!!
Just picked up our Nucanoes last weekend. Finished the trailer about an hour before the pic was taken.
The trailer was a flat bed. I took the wood planks off, made a steel cage, and welded a frame with two beams each to fit in the slots on the bottom of the yaks.
Now I just need to put the planks back on.

While I like the 2 above trailers i was looking for something our Subi Crosstrek could pull as well. This deal kind of fell into our lap and thought would make a go of it. We have pulled it from Port Aransas and all around Temple and it gave us zero trouble. I left all the bolts long encase I wanted to modify something.
This is a Portage Pal trailer and we got a good deal on it. I spoke with a dealer in California and he simply said he would not sell them to most folks because they expect it to take punishment like one of the above trailers would. We wanted to leave them on the trailer in the garage rigged up so we could catch some weekday time on the water after work. We live 15 mins from the boat ramp.
Only time I see this thing going on road is during use on country tanks (man made ponds...) and other rural water access. Being able to drop it off at the water fully geared up would cut 2 hours off our loading and unloading just using the overhead rack system on the truck. This also allows us to use the Crosstrek to haul with thus allowing for less travel costs.

Re: Post your trailer!!!!
Took a small Harbor freight trailer and added a wooden deck to it. Bought a longer tube for the neck... Installed 2 sets of Malone cradles and BAM!
Seems to haul just fine with the 8" tires.

Finished this last week. It started off as a regular 3.5 x 5 from lowes. My buddy James from Smith Family Tackle helped me with it.
Re: Post your trailer!!!!
Been workin on this trailer for a couple of weeks. Started with an old boat trailer, stripped it , cut the tongue short, and started building.
Trying to have a multi-use trailer with remove able kayak cross bars with storage underneath. That way we can do yak trips, Beach trips, or even put a 4 wheeler on it for hunting.
Here's where it's at so far. Almost ready for paint and lights

Almost there...
Re: Post your trailer!!!!
I got my galvanized trailer today. Can't wait to get busy rigging it.
Gonna get the tags in the morning then start the build! I'm so friggin stoked!
Should I change to larger wheels and tires?
Any advice is welcome!

Re: Post your trailer!!!!
I was just looking at your plans and you're going to have an issue with how you designed the upper cross bars. I'm not sure just using bolts and L -brackets is going to be strong enough with the forces that are going to be applied when traveling down the highway.Rhizzlebop wrote:Hello all,

At the very least you're going to need to run a bar between the top bars connecting the front and rear structures. I would then use cross-crossing cables between the structures (i.e. front-top to back-bottom and back-top to front-bottom) to help keep things true traveling down the highway.
Mixing and matching round and square tubing probably isn't a good idea either. I would stick to all square tubing and use a little extra padding on the cross bars.

Wow. No advice at all???
