Wire Leaders...
I was currious to know how to tie a wire leader onto a lure and onto the line. What knots? Or do you just twist wire. I don't see how that would hold though.
Thanks!

You use "crimps" They are sleves like these, Academy sells them in smaller quantities.

Guys
Have you seen Ruddy Gieger's book. He recomended about a 3 inch piece of wire leader when the jacks were in season. Check page 152 of the book.
He used the small stiff #58 pound, ss piano wire using a simple twist ring. If you want a swivel the put it in the front end before you do the loop twist. There are no crips or other mess on the rig. You can get some ss leader wire at Academy or Cut rate. YOu simple loop the bait with wire leader and do a loop with a twist to secure the end.
Otherwise it will look like what McTrout says about swivels on mirrorlures: ie. like Snot hanging off the end of of your nose.

When fishing in the summer and fall (now until Dec.) I use 90-125# plastic coated SS leader wire for the first 12-18 inches, due to catching sharks. My favorite brand is AWF (American Fishing Wire) Surflon and on each package it tells you what size sleeve to use. You can find both at some Academy stores (last time I had to go to 3 of them to find).
You can even use sleeves to hold mono leaders and I have in the past used 0.095 weedeater cord and found aluminum sleeves that work with it.
That may be a little bigger than you want, but I fish btb 99 % of the time.
FTU should have all the sleeves.

I have made several trips offshore and we used what was called a hay wire twist on the steel leader and I have never had one come undone when fishing. I never had to crimp anything and this could be done very quickly out in the boat I might be able to show you how its done if I can find the book I got it out of.

Using single strand a haywire is definetly the way to go. I've never had one fail. The only time I use single strand anymore is for offshore trolling. Here is a link to it http://georgepoveromo.com/perfectlyhaywire.htm One thing to remember when using single strand is do NOT cut the tag end after you twist (or crimp for that matter) You want to twist the wire until it break, that way it will be dull. If you cut it, it will be as sharp as a needle and will easily go through a finger..

you really don't need to use this way if yo uare throwing artificials as you need to stick with a single strand but for good measures here are a few pics I took awhile back
First split the 7 strand into a 3 and 4 strand section
Loop the "3" side back in the the center of of the "Y" where they are split
Now just line up the other piece of cable in the grooves that are already in the cable and just wrap it around the loop
Finished product, this will hold by itself without adding anything. I tested 800# 400# and even some of the tiny stuff and everyone broke in the center of the cable versus at the braid. in other words the cable will pull apart before the braid fails. I do use a little liquid electrical tape sometimes just to make sure it doesn't unwind.
