rods/reels

Post by MONSTER »

can anyone recommend a good (not overly expensive....under $100) rod and/or spinning reel for bay fishing? most of my gear is heavy surf equipment. from what i read, light-to-medium action rods in the 6-7' range are most popular. any brands/models? anything else i need to consider?

sorry, i just posted a similar message on the fishing-classified forum.

thanks,

monster

Under $100....

I would go with a Shimano Sedona 4000 with a Berkley Lightning Rod in Medium Light - Medium Fast Action.

My bro just bought this setup and it put him at about $80 8)

That is about the best recomendation I have ever seen on this site.
Simple and to the point, and answered the question.

Also I have to second it.

i did a quick search and it looks like you can get the reel for around $43. what pound test would you normally use in the bay? any particular rod brands you guys like? would the performance of a slightly more expensive reel be worth paying? i'm partly afraid that in my kayak learning phase, the rod has a chance of going overboard. i guess in shallower water, it wouldn't be too difficult to find.

thanks for the good advice!!!

You can buy "Rod Floats" at academy, they are kind of expensive, I think they are like $10.oo for 3 of them. BUT think of what it would cost to replace the rod and reel?

Line in fresh or salt?

Fresh I use 12lb diameter Fireline.

Salt, most of the guys use the 12lb diameter Power Pro.

i use 30lb test braid, but that is more because of the diameter of the braid. 15 lb is prob adequate for most bay fishing, but I like my 30lb braid 8)

10# or 12# Berkley Trilene XL works for almost everything you'd do.

Try the fishing show this weekend. Ruben and a lot of people will have deals and last years rods for sale.

If you are ging to try walking the dog you need to look at a different type of rod.

Abu Garcia 5500 is a great reel, they are easy to maintain and cast.
