Best Casting Mono

Post by oldsalt »

I prefer to avoid the braid problems and stay with mono on my spinner. What have you found to cast the best with the least memory problems.

Hey OldSalt,

IMO I have great success with Sufix siege 12lb monofilament line. I have tried several brands but sufix seems to have less. I also use a swivel on the end of my main line to help with line twisting and memory. Take care!!

Ditto. Trilene XL has always been my "go to" line. I have noticed that the line will need to be changed out after fishing around oyster reefs, pier pilings, or any heavy timber. I fish both fresh and salt, and have found this line to be my favorite.

Silver thread Excaliber. I have a big roll of 10lb, almost all my trout-weight reels have either braid or Excaliber. Thin, Strong, Limp, casts great, seems to resist knicks good too. Sounds hard to believe, but I have never broke off with this stuff. have had a knot pull once or twice, though - no worse than with any other line) Only issue is that it has a bit more stretch than most mono - seems all the more noticable now that I switch back and forth between Exc and braid on the same fishing trip. I run this line on baitcasters, spinners, and spincasters. Works great in all apps.

I use 14 lb test Stren Clear Blue Mono for 95% of fishing line when fishing for flounder, redfish, spanish mackerel and speck trout.

Big Game 12

Big Game 12 if not braid.

With back lash problems I may get lazy and go back to big game except for flounder.

I am faithful to Ande Blue Mono 8-10 lb test. On my bait casters and spinning reels. No need to use anything else. Available at all walmarts for under $7.00 a spool. http://www.andemonofilament.com/products.htm

I've used XL, XT and various Stren lines. For lines over 12 lb, I prefer the XT, a bit stiffer, but more abrasion resistant in my opinion. 10 and under, the XL. But, for bait soaking I prefer Berkley Big Game in 15 or 20 lb test.

Used Trilene XL for years and loved it. Tried Cajun Red and I like it. Just tried 6# PLine on a light spinner and that stuff is GREAT!

Second the Excaliber Silver thread. Has higher abrasion resistance than the XL, but harder to find.

Gander Mountain had Silver Thread for a while. Tried and liked the 10 lb stuff, bought a couple of spools of the 30 lb for leader material. Unfortunately, I got a tangled mess with the 10 lb on my spinning reel, had to cut off too much and re-spooled with Big Game 10 lb. Gander was out of the 10 pd Silver Thread. Bought it cheap too.

Nobody mentioned spraying the spool periodically with Reel magic. I have found this to keep the line supple and memory free. I use Stren.

I second this for the ANDE line, its the best line out there.

I know you are mentioning mono, and there are a lot of good mono lines out there, but if you aren't fishing an extremely clear water why not use a Fireline? To me I haven't found a better line for spinning rigs, extremely smooth, very castable, and abrasion resistant... Great stuff! I'd give it a try unless you are dead set on a mono.

For spinning rigs, I have always had good luck with the cajun red when using mono. Have you tried the new Stren braid. I used power pro forever, tried the p-line, but I love the Stren. Also there is a trick I leaned from an old timer. If you close the bail by hand, grabthe line w/2 fingers and tighten the line it seems to ward off the spin lash.

Ongoing Casting reel field test

I have been a devotee of Trilene since highschool. On most of my reels I use Big Game because I respool often and you get more for your money.
But, when I started the 6 reel field test, I decided to spool different lines on them. I've been disappointed so much in a couple that I've respooled them. BUT, one notable exception has been the Ande Blue on one reel. It is SLICK, strong, and supple. It has been the biggest surprise of the whole field test. I'll be getting some more of this stuff. 8)
