What is your favorite length rod?

Post by sandman317 »

Do you have a preferred length or do you carry multiple length rods while kayak fishing? I'm fairly new to fishing and slowly figuring out what I like as I go. Or I should say as my bank account allows me....OR as I should really be honest and say "as my wife allows" :D :D :D

I did have a friend give me a new g.loomis 6 ft rod. He owed me a little money. He insisted I take it even though it was worth more than he owed me. I like it but wish it was closer to 7 ft. Im not complaining though

This topic should stir up a lot of folks with lots of opinions. On a kayak, you will be right
at the water level and not as high as in a boat or on the shore, so I like a bit longer rod.
I think a bent rod should still allow you to move from one side of the bow to the other.
Most guys carry two rods: one for light plastic and one for heavy plugs. A shorter rod
will certainly be easier to land fish with. But one over 7' might give you a bit longer casting
distance.

I like 7' and up. The extra length gives a little more casting distance and it helps move around the bow when fighting a fish.

I guess it makes sense to go with a longer rod for the reasons mentioned.

Pretty much every rod I own, whether it's for panfish in a river, or kingfish BTB is 7'.

Nothing less than 7 ft. I've used several high end rods, then tried the Ugly Stik Inshore select. I actually like the Ugly Stik better and it only cost $50 @ Bass Pro.

My favorite is actually my 5 1/2" light action spinning rod. I find my casting accuracy to be pretty good when casting small spinner baits with it. I caught a 5 lb LMB on it about a month ago--it was a blast reeling him in on that little rod.

Mine range from 6'6" for Top water baits, 7'3" for Tx-Rigs, C-rigs, Jigs and Spinner/Blade baits, 7'8" Hvy for Frogs and 7'11" Crankbait rod......No one specific length is bettr or worse than another. All a matter of technique and personal choice.
