Your first Yak fish... when and where???
I keep seeing all of these 1st fish in a yak threads and it got me thinking... for some of you "experienced" (i know better than to say older people haha)...

Re: Your first Yak fish... when and where???
First caught in a yak was a 37" bull red caught last Dec. My first caught using a kayak was a 4' blacktip "running baits" from the beach. Largest in the yak, 46" bull red, largest from a kayak run bait, 8'3" bull shark about 450# All of these were caught from High Island, McFadden Beach area.

Re: Your first Yak fish... when and where???
After three long and frustrating months of trying for reds specifically, this was my first slot (24") caught on 30June09 at 2:13pm in a marsh off of Tilum Tatum Bayou...I haven't been the same since
I had a few flounder, rays and hardheads before that from GISP, but I didn't count those as official...I got a thing for redfish in the marsh... Since that day my skunk ratio has gone down, but I still have stinky days every once in a while...
edit...I neither claim to be experienced, nor an old salt.

I have NO PICS.. I was so excited when I first got my YAK, I hauled ass home(2hrs. away)grabbed my fishing stuff and took off….Got out there and was getting use to the feeling…I started to see movement in the water….DANG IT, I left all my plastics at home, I casted out anyway just getting the feel…and NO LIE sure as hell a Flounder couldn't resist, sure enough that was my first YAK FISH and been hooked every since, TRUE STORY!

I can relate H&W30. My first was an 8 inch sandbass. May not have been a slot red or twenty+ inch speck, but I sure was smiling.

Re: Your first Yak fish... when and where???
I think mine was a couple of years ago.....a little hardhead in Christmas Bay.
My first nice fish was a bull red at High Island. It was a very rough day on the water, and I unclipped from my anchor so I could enjoy my first slay ride. Using braid, my line almost immediately severed another TKFers anchor rope, and then dragged me about 100yds. Successfully released and I was feeling pretty good about myself. Then, I had to paddle into the wind and waves to get back to my anchor. It took everything I had to get back to my float. I seriously considered abandoning my anchor and just heading for shore. Lesson learned....always consider the wind/waves. If you paddle/sleigh ride one way, you're gonna have to go back the other. Now I only take sleigh rides on big sharks and in moderate conditions.

I was in Dean's Yak School. Apr. '06 I think. caught a 18 inch spec on top water and the wind was blowing about 25 mph (maybe only 10 but at the coast it feels like 25). The wind will always blow when Dean has school. No picks of the catch. I was lucky just to stay in the yak.

Re: Your first Yak fish... when and where???
My first yak-caught fish was a 14" Atlantic spadefish caught near the petroleum platform about 2 miles off of Bob Hall pier on North Padre Island last summer while fishing in my 10' Pelican Apex 100. Caught on a 1/2 oz. Kastmaster spoon with a white bucktail on the treble. Two kayaks later, and I can't wait to get after the gulf fish again this summer. See Cast'n'blast's thread on the BTB forum about the Kingfish tournament in July!!!!!
