Pelican Castaway

Post by txspeck »

Anyone ever used the Pelican Castaway Ram series for kayak fishing? I was eondering if oyu could stand up and fish on this particular model.

Thanks,
EastTexas

Yes & No, I have the Pelican Pursuit 100 Kayak with is the same as Getaway 100 w/o the fishing package. I just could not see spending $100+ for 2 rod holders, Shock cords, cleat and green paint.

The 10 footer is fast and stable at only 40 lbs. Besides blue & white looks like a cloud & sky to a fish ;)

Txspeck,
I just purchased a Castaway and it's very stable. I haven't stood up in it (haven't had to), so I'm not sure how well it would do, but it is a very stable ride and I am very pleased with it overall.

Careful guys… some of the other people here have bad mojo for anyone who dares to mention the word pelican and kayak in the same sentence! I found out the hard way!

It's true, people like to boohoo the pelican castaway on this site, but for good reason. It's the ONLY kayak that consistantly gets bad reviews. Some people do ok with it. It's certainly inexpensive and if it's the kayak within your budget, go for it. However, you'll have a hard time reselling it.

For a little bit more money, you can get a much better used kayak. In fact, for a little bit more money you can buy the OK scrambler xt (sometimes labled as a OK specK) or a mainstream kingfish brand new. Both of these are in the 3-4 hundred price range and are well respected kayaks unlike the castaway.

I have a castaway and my wife loves it. We hit the surf and she did just fine in it. She even caught a nice fat topwater speck. Buying a kayak is like buying a boat, there is always better ones out there but get what you want. I have a power boat with a dare I say it................ Force outboard on it. I get people talking about all the time. The fish do not care what you paddle. Get what you want.

No problem at all actually. There are PLENTY of people out there who want to buy a kayak and can't afford a decent one. The Pelican is the easiest to resell because of it's low cost and you'll easily be able to get your money back if you do decide to resell it.

Back when I was young and handsome and only 235 lbs I owned a pelican zest (9' and only rated for 250 lbs  ) and it served me well but like anything else you upgrade. Here is a link that shows what pelican is doing now, I was suprised by it and I think it deserves a look.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion...just some people don't take into consideration how thier opinion affects other people. There is a difference in giving a poor review of a boat and telling someone "hey you got a piece of crap...this is what you should have done" I don't always agree with how people choose to word things on forums but hey that's the benefit of the internet right??? Being able to say what you want when you want with no fear of reprecussion (it's not like the person is right in front of you). What I'm trying to say is...if anyone has bad mouthed your yak...take it with a grain of salt...some people have nothing better to do.

As far as the Pelican brand is conernced...just like every single brand out there it has yaks with problems...I LOVE my Malibu X-13, but alot of people say they have had center hatch leaks and such...not with mine. Pelican products will have flaws as will ALL yaks...find what works for you and get out on the water. It's what I did and to be honest I'm very happy that I purchased a Pelcican as my starter yak and fell in love with the sport. I have since then sold my pelican ( I got most of my money back and it sold off craigs list in 11 hours) and purchased my Malibu.

Buy what you can afford/want...get on the water...enjoy

They are good yaks but BTB in big surf is a NO NO my brother owns one and it flooded trying to go BTB! The hatch won't hold a wave that crashes on you! 8) But for all other purposes he loves it! 8)

He'll have a hard time selling it HERE. Wouldn't have a problem selling it on Craigslist. I have seen several used Castaways sell on CL for $50-$60 less than they were new.

True indeed!
I love my Castaway for calm days on the river or lake, but I made a critical error in judgement in taking it into a severely windy, wavy bay with an active tide. The waves crashing over the top put about a half gallon or more of briney H2O into the yak thanks to the non-water-tight front hatch. SO, now I have a groovy Tarpon T160i thanks to Colleen (HOTkayaks) for the big water and wavy days.
It's all about the right tool (kayak) for the job.

I have a Castaway, it is my first yak and I love it. I have taken it out in the surf in Texas City and didn't have a problem. As for the front hatch, a little extra weather stripping around will help to seal it up better.

Look at kayaks this way: A guy in a Ferarri will say that your Ford Escort is a piece of shit, but a guy on a bicycle would rather drive an escort than pedal all day.

Get what you can afford & makes you HAPPY and get out and catch some fish.

I have a pelican castaway 11'6" right now and while it isn't as fancy or as high a quality as the other kayaks out there, it works for me. It was all I could afford last summer because I had to buy two kayaks so that parents would allow me on the water. You know the buddy rule. Since then they allow me to go some places alone, and I've gotten into some great fishing with these yaks. I would have missed the white bass run and even some minnesotan lake fishing if I had waited for a "better deal" on the more expensive ones. I even took them to lake superior with me last summer and had a blast. The front hatch will leak as I found out when going through some waves on that big lake, but i just paddled it into a cove and drained it out through the back drain plug and tightened it down as tight as I could get it and didn't have another problem. And when I first bought the yak and read some of the reviews on this website it got me down on them a bit, but the funny part is all the real people i see, neighbors, friends, family members are jealous of the fact that I have a kayak and always ask me how I got such a good deal and how sweet they are. Also I don't have to worry so much about how i treat this kayak because I know i've already got my moneys worth outta them and didn't invest a couple grand in them.
