I have been out at least 6 times in my yak and have yet to catch a fish! I am heading to Galveston today around 2pm and launching out of the state park. If any TKFers are in the area feel free to paddle up to the noob in the OK Scrambler XT and his super noob buddy in the OK frenzy and say hello.

First goal = No Injuries
Second goal = No loss of gear
Third goal = Catch edible fish

Wish us luck!

First goal = FAILED got some small cuts on my hand from some oyster bed.

Second goal = WIN! no gear lost.

Third goal = FAILED!

FISH 7 me and Sir Yak A Lot 0. This is so GDamn aggravating not a single FREAKIN fish. They jumped from the left they jumped from the right one smacked into the side of my yak so hard I almost shat myself. NOTHING!

Water report = HOT like bath water and brown pretty murky. Overall FISHING SUCKED

Good news is GISP put in a boardwalk to launch kayaks so you don't have to walk through the grass and mud. Was told it would be done tomorrow and provided by local Eagle Scouts.

If the water gets too hot, game fish leave the area for a deeper and cooler water. Since fish were jumping all around you, they might have been mullet.

I figured it was either or both the water temp and the clarity. I dont have a very extensive lure collection yet, mainly just silver and gold spoons. What kind of artificial baits work well in murky brown water?

I am not a bay fisherman, but over the years I have observed in reports that the most successful bay fishermen launch before light and are usually done by 9-10 am. If you are launching at noon or later, I think you need to try deeper waters.

Good luck!!!

I found your post with the configurations. Bunks add surface area to spread tension and more gently hold the yak. I wish I could think of a way to make it conform better. I had considered something like a tire-like strong belt that could act like one of those swingset seats that I always abhorred. The bite your ass for goodness sake, did they suddenly stop making good old boards?

Anyhow a flexible saddle and a decent strap, maybe the rubber bungees and a fore and aft 1/4" nylon braid rope. Dunno, still thinking about it... hoping to come across a used trailer.

It looks like you used the same materials I have stored, stainless channel with all those holes. I'd like to see how you did the top corners and connection to the trailer rails.

Oh, I had some croakers and went maybe 1/2 mile out to prettier water and could only muster a steady bite of gafftops. They were 3-4 lbs and fought good, Anyhow, it was a bite and it was different. I was surrounded by dolphins late close to shore, strong smellin slick! No bites though. They were there but I am pretty sure I just wasn't holding my mouth right.

The channel is called uni-strut and was bought at Home Depot in the electrical area. The 90 degree connections and the bolting to the trailer were done using the L-brackets used for uni-struts, also in the electrical isle.

Sorry for the hi-jack.
