New Paddle ?'s

Post by Hookset »

just bought my first "used" fishing kayak.
malibu X-factor. don't have a paddle yet.
my previous experience has been with small sink's and sot kayaks just paddling around nice small rivers. never something this big.
i am 6'1'' 235#s and i will occassionally/often be taking my boys along.
i plan on fishing/paddling coves on lakes like ray roberts.

any advice on a paddle in the under $125 range?

thanks,

This is a personal preference decision and will be difficult to answer.

I had a 220 cm paddle with a narrow paddle blade and I was happy with it when I paddle an OK Drifter. I upgraded to an X-Factor and the old paddle just didn't seem to move the X like I wanted it to.

I upgraded to a 240 cm paddle with a broad blade and I am happy with how it works.

There are others who have a ton of more experience than me that can advise you and there are paddle mfgr. websites that offer an interactive paddle selection guide.

Get a paddle length like Mythman . . .

I have X-Factors and 230's are short for the yak.

adjustable or fixed length
feathered or not...

when i was renting i just took what they gave me.
wondering if i can do better now that i am buying.

Werner Skagit is my favorite paddle in that price range, it is a fiberglass shaft with nylon reenforced blades. It makes for a light yet very dependable paddle.
