kayaking in current

Post by crabeyes »

I was wondering about the difficulties of kayaking in a tidal river. The river system i fish has very fast currents during tide changes. Can you paddle against strong currents safely or not? Any details, advice, tips would be great. Thanks!

It just depend on how fast the current is moving. I can paddle my SPTW without too much difficulty in a swift current, but I have to paddle with a fast cadence. If the water is moving too fast for my tastes, I won't make the attempt to go against the current.

Yeah, and it will be easier with a longer boat compared to shorter whitewater boats.

Remember to keep the boat parallel to the current as much as possible and ferry from bank to bank and look for eddies to make the upstream paddling easier.

Also, how fast is fast?

im not sure how fast it is...quick though. In a 14 foot lund v-bottom with a 80lb thrust trolling motor the boat will struggle to move. It's the pascagoula river in MS.

Don't know your boat but if an 80lb thrust trolling motor
has a problem I would not even try it.
