Newb from Corpus Christi

Post by Texas Hooter »

Howdy. Newb here from the beautiful city of Corpus Christi. I just ordered my first kayak.
I’ve been getting around in a modified inflatable skiff for inshore fishing. I got tired of the labor involved deploying it, so I ordered a yak. It is a Old Town Predator MK. It should arrive this week from evolution outdoors.
My kayak experience is minimal. I plan on taking it out without gear to make sure I get the kayak part down before I use it for fishing. I’ve ran across this site a few times while looking for info so I figured it would be wise to join up for future advise.
I welcome any advice for a newb kayaker. Thank you in advance.

Welcome,

You're on the right track regarding making your maiden voyage gear free (except PFD, whistle, and 360 deg. light from sunset to sunrise. From there I'd keep things to a minimum as far as tackle and gear.

Here's a Google Map with access points around Corpus Christi.

The less junk I bring in my kayak the more fish I catch.

That makes sense. I do not plan on hauling a ton of junk. I won’t be camping or anything. Just casual fishing when I’m able to.
