New to Kayaking-Need help picking a Kayak

Post by Dunkan2233 »

Thank you guys and gals for adding me to your group.
I recently moved in Houston near 249 and Cypresswood.
I have this nice lake next to my Apt complex called Marshall Lake.

I see people fishing it all the time but the lake has a lot of trees along the shoreline. There are people fishing it quite a bit with Kayaks, which seems to be the ticket to fishing this size of a lake

I am new to kayaking period and want to get one. I am not small by no means 5'10 and 280ish
I need help on what to look for when looking for a kayak or any recommendations. I am open to new or used

Things to consider: Sit-inside or sit-on-top? How will you store the kayak? How will you transport it?

You don’t want to load in more than 70% of the stated weight capacity of a kayak. So add up your weight plus the weight of all gear (rods, boxes, cooler, etc.), and you probably want a kayak with at least a 500 lb weight capacity. There are several of those available.

Check out what Austin Canoe & Kayak has, there are two Houston locations. Demo, demo, demo.

Get a good, light paddle and a good PFD that fits comfortably.
