Teaching newbies

Post by Nickels and Dimes »

Looking for a place to introduce my wife and daughter to kayaking. Interested in somewhere not too far from League City with no boat traffic or high currents. Any ideas?

Haven't been there myself yet, but Highland Bayou Park might be ok and convenient. My first time to take my wife and daughter out a couple years ago was in one of the canal neighborhoods. They all have ramps. The advantage of the canal 'hoods is no wake zones, wind breaks, and the feeling of safety if they are timid. Otherwise, Galv park on bay side is calm and boatless at the westernmost launch site and has somewhat grassy shores and is semi-scenic. Good luck and make it easy for them

I chose a small park that had a small pond in it. It was perfect. I did not see any signs posted online or on premises that said "No boating."

If you want to be in the salt and in the marsh, go to exit #6 on 45 south just beyond Omega Bay subdivision. Shallow water no boats can get in, no waves, just the wind would be your enemy. The marsh is on the west side of 45. Exit #6 and start slowing down till you come to a bridge were a channel cuts under 45. If you just cross the bridge you can back your truck up in a lane that you can off load your yaks right up to the water. Very quite and no traffic. Very shallow water in case of any spills.
