White Bass Fly Choices

Post by jcovey »

Does any
body have any advice on what fly may be a good choice for schooing whites chasing shad?

They're starting to surface in the early AM and Late PM on Somerville and I'm hoping to git 'em one evening.

Small chrome poppers like Bob's Bangers or small Crease Flies are effective flies for them. Pencil poppers in chrome or chartruese are also good. Don't rule out, though, a slow sinking chrome clouser. Strip it quick through the frenzies.

Gartooth,
The crease fly looks like just the ticket. Now I've got to figure out where to get a few. It's not like there's a fly shop on every corner in College Station.

I made a run out there this afternoon and got chased off of the water by a thunderstorm. No fishies to be found. They've been off of the points and around the damn area, from what I've heard. I hope to get back out there in a week or so.

Clousers in Chart/White and Grey over white work well up here.

I always use shallow water Clousers or Cypert minnows when fishing the spawn. They would probably work, but if you are fishing busting shad then the Crease fly would bring more attention.
