Spring break redfish crowds

Post by Copperspoonfly »

I woke up at Inn at Clarks in POC on Friday, and was greeted with low winds & low tides. There were a handful of boat trailers in the parking lot, but no one in line at the boat ramp. Most of the marsh ponds that I like to pole in the Soloskiff were bone dry. I cut the engine and drifted towards a grass shoreline, and soon ran into the first group of reds. These guys saw me on the skiff and spooked. At least I found an productive area holding fish. About 80 feet ahead I saw a couple orange tails waving at me. I pushed the skiff onto shore and got into water. The fish were focused on digging up crabs & shrimp. They did not notice my approach. I dropped a small weighted shrimp pattern into the middle of the group. The fly landed with a soft splash and sank onto the sand. A spotted tail pushed up high into the air and then I felt the grab. I made a solid strike and watched the red race tearing up across the shallow flat. After a quick picture and release, I spotted another group of reds crawling along the shoreline. During the next 2 hours, I got shots at one pod of tailing redfish after another. I probably saw over 100 tailing fish that day. It was as if every redfish in the country flew in for a spring break vacation in POC. Hopefully, the water levels stay low for a while.

Awesome! That's a great day out in POC. Clark's is not a bad place at all!

I will be copying your small shrimp fly today. It's perfect spring shrimp.

It has been a while since I tied any flies. I think this was a bonefish pattern that I bought a few years ago for a trip to Xcalak. I know there is a video of Capt Jeremy Chavez, that shows him tying up a shrimp pattern and he goes into some detail on how to make the eyes. His website is called casting tails.

Would someone give me a guess at the hook size. I'm having some of these made up (since I can barely tie my shoes) and they are asking for a hook size
Thanks

Looks like a size 4 to me. A 4 or 6 would be good for that shrimp fly.
