I was fishing for cichlids and sunfish, up tight and under tree limbs. See the size of this fly! At first, it seemed like pulling up a pile of submerged brush . . . . . then a big green head, and two black eyes appeared! It is a wonder my 3wt (Cabelas Three Forks/7'6") didn't snap in half. It was like eternity getting this fish to the net. The fish was perked up and lively for the release.

I had just tied on a 5x leader, and cut it back a couple of feet to get into the taper a bit. Just tied on the fly, so the knot was good. The drag was firm, and I had to pinch the fly line against my rod handle a couple of times when the fish was swimming for cover . . . . those are worrisome times because the hook can pull out. I have lost several similar fish in the past by putting too much pressure on them. It was my good fortune that the hook was solidly lodged in the tough tissue in the corner of the mouth. The fish attempted to leap and shake the head, but was too fat to get out of the water.
