Hook Penetration

Post by txspeck »

I came across this article discussing hook penetration using different hook sizes. Learn something new every day!

Excellent share. Thanks. I like lighter wire hooks like stated in the article. Especially for speckled trout.

I have been using the Rockport Rattler for about 2 years. What I notice when using this hook with a thicker artificial I have fish that seem to be hooked then while reeling in they get off. I know we will loose some fish, but my last fishing trip 5 fish came off. I have been looking to try a new hook to accomodate a thicker bait.

According to the above, the Rockport Rattler is made from a Mustad ultra point hook. Maybe the gap is too small for bigger plastics. Some of the Mustad hooks I tie with are sharp and some aren't. I guess you sharpen your hooks. I carry a little Tiemco ceramic hook hone with me. I like my hooks needle sharp.

Owner and Gamakatsu have some nice looking jig heads.

You can get some insert type rattles if you want a rattle.
