Rockport for the next few days
Rockport for the next few days
I've got the Gheenoe in tow hauling ass towards POC right now. Gonna call Rockport home base for the next few days. May make it as far south as Yarborough flats. I'll try to give updates at night. Can I have 2 Octobers?!

The water is high and has been for some time. Find your self a cow pasture to fish in. What I mean is someplace that is normally dry land that is now flooded. That is where the fish are and they are in skinny water. Less than 1' deep for sure.
Good luck and post up the results.

I've been seeing a lot of drum on the sand just south of Bird Island. Also, good reds if you get skinny in and around Lighthouse Lakes.
I don't need two Octobers, but I do need to take the whole month off from work.

AP is your home away from home, I'll trust your insight! Appreciate it, I'll let you know how it goes.GoDoe wrote:The water is high and has been for some time. If someone was on the bow, we would have had plenty of shots. Poling and fishing solo is tough. Still figuring methods that work.
Went to Mule Slough today. Water is up but the fish are there. Buddy is driving in tonight. Probably hit up another section of the coast tomorrow. Small crabs and shrimp flys.

Yeah fishing solo from a skiff is a tough task, but you will eventually get better at it. When I fish solo I lay the rod on the poling platform Inbetween my feet with line in a stripping basket or in ge cockpit.
To get the boat to pole close to right I fill up a 20 gallon trash can 1/2-3/4 full and set it as far forward on the bow as I can. That or I put my big yeti as far forward as possible.
The trash can filled with water works very well.

Well, How did you do? You got us all excited.......................
Re: Rockport for the next few days
Sorry about that. The trip wasn't too hot, but we learned about the area.
LHL - scarce reds with schooling black drum. Rather large black drum. Couldn't get them to eat.
B&R flats - scarce reds found as we drifted towards deeper water. Seems like we couldn't get close enough to see them before we spooked them. Did catch one as we fan casted spoon flies.
South Bay - pretty much like B&R.
I still think we need another good cold front to kick things off. The water was also super high, but that was expected.

For what it's worth....We did find a decent amount of reds up against the wind protected shorelines of South Bay but they did not seem interested in eating. Way up against the shoreline...like underneath the mangroves.
On the way home that evening, we noticed how bright the full moon was, I'd bet they gorged themselves throughout the night.

What kind of Gheenoe?
Re: Rockport for the next few days
Classic 15'6". She's a babe. I always mean to get pictures of her while she's in the element on the flats...but never seem to do it while I'm out there.

Cool! I've got an LT25. Won't get as shallow as the kayak, but I can cover a lot more area.
