Nice! Check out those green hair packers sold by pat Cohen...things work amazing for getting tight deer hair bodies.

I need to. I was going for a loose pack as some video I saw pointed me in that direction to reduce buoyancy. Pat Cohen’s deer hair bugs are works of art.

I bought maybe a dozen of these divers from a discount fly retailer. They aren’t exactly uniform and are pretty loosely packed and the ones that ride a little lower and dive a little deeper seem to work better. I just tried to copy the store bought ones and shade mine to just barely float instead of riding high. They are actually a pretty fast and easy tie, especially if you are pretty indifferent about the deer hair spinning and packing. It would have been even faster if I had a razor.

It’s nice now that I live on water as I can immediately test the flies I tie. I tested the first 3 I tied to see how they swimmed. I missed a fish with the third one being a little quick on the set.

So the deer hair divers swim great. One thing I’ve noticed is they tend to get a little waterlogged after a while. That affects the buoyancy. Next batch, I’m going to pack the hair a little tighter and trim a little less. Somewhere, deer hair divers cross the line and become muddler minnows. Some of this batch seems to be a hybrid.

The brown trout of the Colorado River (in Colorado) approve of my red midges.

Size 6 tungsten beaded buggers for those deeper cool season LMB and catfish in a shallow lake. Size 2 and 4 deer hair clousers to hit the same depths. Gray seems to work well so I did plenty of those. Also tied 3 of the clousers on size 4 Gamakatsu circle hooks. Never tried a circle for a fly. Image

The flies I tied Sunday, the buggers and clousers, are proving to be good enough. Hard to go wrong with buggers and clousers. ImageImage

The olive bugger gets it done one day and the next not at all. Yesterday, it was the chartreuse and black that worked. Olive got me nowhere. Fish are funny. The plan is to tie up some more of the chartreuse and black buggers since I only did the one. I’m losing flies at a rate of about 2 per outing.

Lost an inch of tip off one of my 7/8 CGRs. Glued the tip back on and the rod is as good as new.

Nice fly action, Karst. The dog is awesome! We babysit a friend’s canine that looks EXACTLY like that!

Spent some time Sunday tying more buggers. I exhausted my supply of 3/16" tungsten beads and resorted to cannibalizing old worn out shrimp flies for more beads. Did most on a size 6 mustad streamer hook, but also did a few on size 10 and 16 hooks.

Any fly that can catch different types of fish on the same outing is one I want in the box. Next time, I might get some tungsten wire and try weighting a few that way. I'm about out of chennile. It's fun to be excited about a fly. Image

Did a little freshwater fly fishing to thoroughly rinse off the salt. Couldn't find any bass or catfish. Sunfish were willing to take the chartreuse and black buggers. ImageImageImage

I wish I had a place nearby to do some of that kind of fishing. My wife calls it perch jerking and loves it too. Unfortunately, I haven't found any places in Southeast Texas.

Have you tried Buffalo Camp Bayou in Lake Jackson? I haven’t fished there in a long time but remember catching sunfish. There’s a small boat public boat ramp off hwy 332 on the way to Brazoria. Shy Pond has bank fishing, but I think you have to have a kid with you. I’ve caught some sunfish in Oyster Creek in Lake Jackson. Dunbar Park has a public kayak launch near the mall (on the north bank of the Creek) and hundreds of feet of pretty open shoreline. Oyster Creek gets absolutely no fishing pressure and very little runoff unless there’s a big rain. I’ve even caught redfish within the city limits of Lake Jackson, but closer to Brazosport College, another place to access the creek at least by walking. There’s talk of putting a kayak ramp there, but I don’t think it’s happened yet.

One other weird place that should have sunfish but I haven’t fished there is the Dow Woods off old Angleton road going north from the Bucees off 2004. It’s in the “headwaters” of bastrop bayou and might be too brushy to Fish a fly set up. I just thought of Austin Bayou where it intersects county road 208. I’ve fished there in a kayak during the drought and it was mainly a lot of gar but it’s far enough inland to get sunfish.

An absolutely stunning place to fish is the Colorado River below Wharton when the flows are low. Clear water, gravel bottoms, bald eagles, really nice. There’s a small ramp below wharton off pecan Valley road and a take out in a park off County road 444 above Markham. That park has a goodly amount of bank frontage on the river.

Thanks for those ideas but they are all a long drive from Beaumont for a day trip. I grew up in Southeast Louisiana so I guess I am spoiled. We had lots of places nearby to go for a quick fishing trip. This part of Texas doesn't seem to be blessed with that option.

Downsized the chennile to small and tungsten bead from 3/16" to 5/32" on the latest batch of size 6 buggers. Made the size 6 fly a lot more fun to cast with the 4/5 weight and that made the fish more fun to catch. Didn't really lose anything except a little weight. Wolfram is the way to go for getting deep.

Purple was the color today. The fish really like purple. Warm weather and sun probably made more difference than any color scheme. ImageImageImageImageImage

I love those technicolor buggers. Purple has always been a good color for me too. Bass, trout, and panfish all really dig it.

The fish were digging purple. Going to whip up more in that color. Seems like all tthe colors work more or less, though. Putting a 5/32" bead was an improvement over the 3/16". Brings my 4/5 weight CGR into play and that's where I want to be on these fish.

First flies of 2018. A pair of Del Canty’s No-body muddlers. Tied rough the way many of his flies were.

Cuervo, I can't see the photo of your most recent flies.

I tied some crawdads. Size 8 60 degree jig hook. Turkey feather got it done. Plus some silicone legs and some glass eyes. Swam nice. ImageImage

Woah! You posted just before I did, Karst. Weird. Yeah. They were gone but hopefully are back now. Here’s tonight’s. Some of Bob Good’s classic Colorado Caddis.
