Re: Furled leaders
I like furled mono leaders for skinny salt - nothing floats better or better turns over big flies in the wind.
I've tried the thread furled leaders for trout fishing, dry flies - I don't like them - others swear by them.
For trout, I use tapered nylon mono for dries (no tippet), and H&H braided butt leaders for nymphing (fluoro tippet).

Re: Furled leaders
I could go either way, they hold up pretty well but they aren't as soft of landing when throwing dries to coldwater trout. At there very best they still aren't as good as a fresh Orvis superstrong leader. Try them out, I could see that if you fish day in day out like the guys outwest they would have their merit in that you just need a couple different spools of tippet and you're good for a couple months.

Yep, still using some of the one's I got from you JB. Once I got my act together and really worked with them, I absolutely love 'em. Those leaders throw some of the smaller poppers I made easily. I need to get one for my 8wt soon.

Re: Furled leaders
good point - they also don't line fish as badly because they cast a profile in the surface tension more like natural flotsam.Javelina Russ wrote:.. I like how they landed and 6# trilene big game is cheap and tough!!!

Re: Furled leaders
I've been using a twisted leader for about the last year or so for all my bass and saltwater fishing. I use 12lb mono for the smaller streamers and 20 to 30lb for bigger flies like zonkers and big poppers. Just search it on YouTube under twisted leaders.
Re: Furled leaders
Would any of you guys that make your own leaders care to send me one or two to try out? I could send you some flies or tying materials to offset your time? I have never tried them, but would like to just to see if I like them.

Re: Furled leaders
One thing to remember - especially for larger fish like redfish and tarpon - furled leaders are very stretchy, making it much harder to get a good solid strip-set on a larger fish. I quit using them on 8/0 and up because of that. I still use them on my smaller gear.

Re: Furled leaders
What material were they made of Walker? Mine are the coats and clark nylon and the dont stretch much at all.
Re: Furled leaders
yep still use mine.Very handy to just carry replacement tippet, fly box and rod and reel. Only down side is the flouro one's sink, no so good for gurglers/poppers.

Re: Furled leaders
Wonder if you could make one from braided line, but I bet it would sink fast!
Like walker said they stretch, I just try too use mono with low stretch to equal it out.

Here is a link to the twisted leader I was talking about. I was skeptical at first but they work really well.

Re: Furled leaders
Never messed with them. I don't really trout fish so no need there and I use a butt section of Hard Mason and a flouro or mono tippet. 12# butt section on 6wt & under; 20# on 8wt; 30# on 10wt; and 50# on the 12wt.
