I have an old Shakespeare ugly stick rod and reel combo I got for $40 years ago. Its ok, nothing special. I plan on upgrading without spending a lot.
For the reel I'm going to get the Shimano Sienna Spinning Reel. Its on sale for less than $30 at academy.
For the rod I'm undecided between the Shimano Sellus Freshwater Spinning Rod and Berkley Lightning Rod M Spinning Rod. 2500
I will post links of the items from Academy, by the way this coupon code gets you %10 off academy today: 18WACTEN

I personally like the Ugly Stik line of rods for the price and durability. As for the reel, Shimano is a good name brand reel and has good reviews everywhere. You can find comparable reels as well and they are about the same price.
I never pay more than $50 for a reel and $50 for a rod myself. I currently have over 60 rods of different makers and about 40 reels of different makers as well. Most have lasted me a very long time with cleaning and maintenance.

Thank you for the input KB, I saw a few posts on here about the sienna and since its low priced I figured I'd give it a shot.

I have a berkley lightning rod in 6'6 ML. With a 2000 series Daiwa RG and 10lb test. Bought it on sale 3 years ago and its a tank has pulled in way more fish than my waterloos. Specks, whiting, and reds.
Really good rod for the money.
Sienna is a great budget reel also.
