Fish ID help

Post by Red tickler »

Hey guys - Pulled this sunfish out of the pond yesterday. Just started fishing this pond and trying to distinguish between the different types of fish in the pond. I thought it was a coppernose bluegill but my equally "green" to freshwater fish species dad said green sunfish. After a couple years in fishing retirement, I've been surprised by how much fun it can be to target even smaller LMB and sunfish types on an ultra light. Any help would be appreciated.

It's a bluegill. Coppernose bluegills is a subspecies native to Florida that is raised and sold for pond stocking in much of the southeast. I'm not sure of a reliable way to physical tell them apart. Of course, there is a genetic difference and huge difference in growth rates. Coppernose bluegill get bigger, faster.
