River flows

Post by Kayak buddy »

I'm planning a kayak trip for my bro and I down the upper Guadalupe near spring branch. It looks like are up around 500cfs. If I recall that's unsafe for the river in that area. But not a problem below the lake. Can someone comment about safe flow?

Depends on your kayak skills and the particular section of the river. Generally 1000 cubic feet is the limit for me in my one man pontoon to 3 miles upriver of 281, but kayaks could do higher flow. Some care and Portaging below that until after the BR#11 upstream rapids. No issues at br #11, I've launched with the tennis courts 4 ft under water. A web search will turn up info on how to run the rapids and portage. Below the dam I've done the tube loop at 1000.

When are y'all planning on going? The river peaked close to 800 cfs two days ago, but is falling back to a more normal flow between 300 & 400 cfs. Should be good to go for the weekend.

I ran it around 350-450 about 6 years ago. Had a blast.
