Snake ID

Post by chris3250 »

Saw this guy at the local bass hole in Clear Lake(south of Houston) on Horsepen Bayou.. anyone have any idea what kind? Completely submerged and had a triangular shaped head that made it look poisonous. Any ideas?

Looks like a diamondback water snake. Nonvenomous but still bite a lot. Here's one that took lure then wrapped up in my line

Just saw one like it leave my back porch. I paid particular attention to the tail, no rattles. I estimate about 4-5' long.

almost certainly. as mentioned above, like many water snakes they have powerful musk - nasty stuff.

non-venomous, but sharp little teeth.

I'm pretty sure if I had any inkling that it was a moccasin, I wouldn't have waited 10 minutes to spot the snake...
