Its sad to see the Blanco River at 5 Mile dam bone dry......

Post by centexfish »

The Blanco river at 5 mile dam is looking pretty sad, nearly bone dry, except for a few deep pools. The river gets is name from the bleach white rocks in the river. These pics were taken on Tuesday of this week, we will need a lot of rain to fill the river back up and get it flowing again. I saw a few minnows in the pools and lots of turtles.

wow  , is that down stream from the state park? Any fish in those ponds have to be extremely hungry and easy to catch.

We were just watching a video (shot in 2010) of my grandson and my two daughters tubing from the dam going downstream. There was good flow going over the dam and lots of families out there, too...

Sad indeed :(

It would be a good time to make some repairs or increase the height of the dam a few inches.

But it's hard to get those types of things into motion. :horse:

Also a good time to photograph the contours in those deeper spots, so you know what's where when the water returns.

Horrible, that was one of my favorite spots when I lived in SM. Still, I've seen it worse, and the fishery has always rebounded once the water returned. We'll just hope the rains come soon, and that the fish populations recover eventually.

That's the reason it is so dry, because too many damn people are damming the rivers. 100 years ago they didn't flow with abundance, but the rivers flowed constantly. Then people got greedy and decided they wanted more water on their property and began creating breaks in the waterways (dams). Now, without consistent rainfalls, these rivers dry up into small ponds behind these dams.

The last thing we need is more dams for the sake of dams.

Could too much brush/cedars in the watershed be a contributing factor?
