River Maps

Post by txaggie00 »

Have any of you ever seen contour maps of rivers? I know when lake fishing we use maps a lot and i'm relatively new to river fishing. Was just thinking it would be nice to have maps of rivers to find old road crossing, deep pools, anything where fish might hide. Or is this not really needed considering the scope. It's not like we have Nile rivers here. Just a brainstorm I thought I might throw out there.

They would be out of date after every rise.
After a flood it is a whole new river to explore.

I use USGS maps for topography and general information. No contour maps, bowgarguide is right on.

X3 - even Google maps are out of date after moderate rises.

I don't claim to be a texas river expert, but I have an observation that I have noticed. Other than scour holes within the first mile of the dam, there are very few North and Central texas river sections that get much deeper than 12 feet, when water isn't being released.

I have paddled upper sections of the trinity, upper sections of the brazos, parts of the red, the guad, and I have hiked a few other of the smaller central texas streams. If I find water >10' deep, I immediately think honey hole.

This did not hold true to the bayous of east texas, where the S.P. of Caddo lake, which is on a bayou, was about 20-30' and the feeder bayous to Sam Rayburn were also very deep.

Can any of you river rats put any credence to my observation?

In this area there are some 25 ft holes and a lot that are 12 to 14 ft even when the rivers down.

Not corrected just a different part of the river.,you have more rock there ,we have sand and clay ,I just think it is the location.
I have paddled your area and you are dead on about it.
