This little piggie went "pew pew pew" all the way home.

Post by Prof. Salt »

I've had a hog problem around my feeder for a month, and the dominant pigs are big and smart. Every time I set up with the right wind, they change their behavior and wind me. At least the big ones do... Well I got tired of being busted while bow hunting so I brought out the 308 and retreated back to the box blind. The big boar came in early and staged under the box blind ...and eventually winded me. Stupid boar.

Then close to dark I heard some small pigs fussing with each other as they came in. Sure enough, after three of them came out to eat, momma walked out too. From 75 yards I guessed her to be around 60 lbs  , but with our pigs it's really difficult to guess weights unless they stand beside something of known size. I, for instance, am 6'4" and 240lbs. Her three young ones were half her size, and once I shot this sow and saw her up close, I'm thinking the young ones would be a perfect size to toss on the pit! This sow had some good hams and chops, and the tenderloins looked great too. I didn't bother with the front shoulders because freezer space is limited. I will try again to get the boar in the morning so the deer can begin coming around.

At least your pests are edible! Good luck in getting the boar.

How did the Junction trip go?

I had an Axis curse! First night I got two whitetail does and FIL got an Axis buck. He got a second one the next morning, and another one the last morning. The second Axis measured 27 inches and the third was 30 1/4 inches! Ten men took 28 deer on a three day hunt... That's a lot of meat!

You got to watch those hogs, they become addicting.
I let WAY more deer walk away now days since I've started harvesting hogs.
I actually prefer the hog (sow) meat or young boars to deer meat.
Not as fond of the big boars

That's a pile of protein for sure. Hope you've been a good SIL and the FIL shares some of that Axis. :)

Actually he was pondering where to put all that protein on the trip home. I cleared my throat and he finally asked if I wanted one of the axis. Uh, yes sir I do! :D

...and now I know for a fact they're delicious
