Qucik Question about Hunter Orange

Post by Rig'emNGig'em »

So Academy had these orange vest with some realtree camo on them (see the picture), and thinking it was a little more comfortable than the dinky orange vest with velcro clasps I got it. The question is is this still considered orange for the requirement for hunting on public lands or do those have to be pure orange with no pattern on them?

I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket for those. A quick call to TPWD should clear it up for sure

I have drawn patterns on plain orange vest since the the 80's. Could argue that there are xxx square inches of just orange. I have never seen a GW while hunting.

Never trust anyone on a forum for game law advice.

But that still doesn't answer the OP's specific question. I'm a hunter ed instructor and I can't answer the question without some doubt given the information I have at hand.

Yea thats why I was asking its not exactly clear and I cant afford a ticket on my grad student salary. Probably will take the full orange and one with a pattern and just check at the ranger station when I go scouting this week.

You ever get an answer to your question? Judging by the hunters I saw at the boat launch this weekend, I'd say that vest would be good, but I'm still curious about the actual law.

It's interesting that texas owned public land requires 400" and a hat but the national forest I hunt regularly only requires the 400" and doesn't require the hat.

I personally would never go hunting on public land without my hard hat...

But seriously. I would check and see if the sq inch requirement is met. I'm not aware of any pattern requirements. I thought it just said 400 sq inches of hunter orange.

You may check the tag. I know for instance life jackets all say where they count as a USGC flotation device. Perhaps they offer the same guidance.

Never could get a definite answer, even after calling Parks and Wildlife. Ive been just wearing it and keeping the old cheapo one in the truck in case I do run into the man.

I know Colorado specifies no camo orange. Texas public lands book does not specify, but any give warden might have his own opinion.
