That thing would be awesome for hunting dove over a baited area.

And it still almost "kicked" the table down that it was affixed to.

I think that's what they call a punt gun. Made to be fired from a punt for waterfowl (a large row boat). In another video, they had one strapped to a row boat.

It's a shoulder fired shotgun, not a punt gun. The punt guns were basically a cannon that would take up to 2 lbs of shot and could break the transom off the back of the boat if it wasn't secured right. That gun was used after the punt was fired so you could catch the ones that got away. That was back when commercial hunting was around and before game laws were really created.

If it was used in big game hunting it was called a 2 bore and would use a solid lead ball to take dangerous game down. like rhino and elephants.

The 10 gauge and 8 gauge are now the 2 biggest shotguns you can get now and you can still get ammo for them, but very few places will allow you to use anything bigger than a 10 gauge.

My grandfather grew up in Sabine Pass. He said the market hunters would have up to 3 of those shotguns mounted on the bow of a small boat. They would drift or paddle up to a big raft of ducks and shoot. He said they would came with well over a hundred birds most mornings.

During the 20's as a teen my grandfather said he would kill 3 ducks, have local guy smoke or BBQ them, give the guy one, and take the other two home. Do other trading for shells and no need for money.
