Pronghorn Hunt update

Post by Alsatian »

This is an update to this: http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/foru ... 4&t=219231" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So I went on the TPWD draw hunt for pronghorn over the weekend. We arrived early afternoon on Friday and scouted around and found the buck i wanted. Woke up early on Saturday and headed out to the hunting grounds. It was still dark when we got there so my group and I got everything ready to find my buck. Sun rose a little bit and Ken said "hey there's your buck" Yep there he was standing 500 yards from where we parked. We started to get closer for a better shot and he moved off a bit. We then got back in the truck and drove around the county road about two miles and got in front of him. We crawled under the fence for about 40 yards and peered over the rise and spotted him at 400 hundred yards and quartering to us. We laid prone for a few minutes while he slowly worked to us. He stopped broadside to us and Ken ranged him at 320 and said take the shot. I lined up the cross hairs, exhaled slowly and squeezed the trigger. Boom, you could even hear the bullet whistle and then heard it hit. The pronghorn hunting season opened at 6:54 am 10-3-2014 and I was tagged out before 8:30. There were three of us in a group and we worked together to get all the tags filled. As a bonus we all took small caliber rifles for the prairie dogs. Who knew you could hit one at 400 yards with a 17 hmr with a cheap 3x9 scope. :D All in all it was an awesome hunt. We'll probably make it back up there next year to shoot prairie dogs again for a couple of days. My buck officially scored 76 1/2 B&C. He's off to the taxidermist in about an hour.

Prairie dogs are a hoot. Dad used to have them on his farm...lots of time spent "thinning the herd" :lol:

depends on who you ask. The people that grew up eating them say they're good. I's say not so much. This particular animal was old and smelled really, really bad (insert your own BB, Bigrock, or Flatfish joke)and doesn't seem to appetizing. I have some in the freezer and I'll eventually get around to tasting it.

Thank you. Although I am not a hunter I have had the pleasure to eat many of the wild critters. Pronghorn had not been one of them. At one time I had a friend that would trade me elk for fish. Man that was a good deal for me.

I just received my paperwork for the Texas Big Game Awards which has the official score of 77 4/8 for this buck as opposed to the 76 1/2 in my original post. I would like to take the time now to apologize to everyone for my misrepresentation of this animal. I'm sorry. But how often does anyone claim that their animal is smaller than it actually was. Especially on a fishing forum. :lol: :lol:
