One of those nights... Dove Hunt
Tonight was one of those nights. You know the ones where you are kinda glad that no one joined you. The type of night where you make the best of things by grinding it out in miserable conditions and are rewarded in the end. Yeah, tonight was one of those. The dog and I hit the field as the rain began to steadily come down at about 3pm yesterday. We sat in a steady cold rain quietly for almost 2 hours only firing 2 shots at distant passing birds. I had decided at this point to pack things in. We were in the process of leaving the public land when I saw a lone dove drop into a field of what looked to be freshly cut Milo. We pulled off and watched that spot for another 20 minutes as a hard rain continued to inundate the field. A few more birds dropped in as we looked on. Determined to avoid striking out, I grabbed Rylie, a box of shells, and went walkabout as the rain let up slightly. 15 yards in to the fresh cut milo I flushed and smoked my first 3 birds. They were hunkered down everywhere. It was all downhill from there. The good lord graced me with 90 minutes of shooting light and mild rain. I only needed 45 to punch out my limit. A triple, two doubles and a handful of singles. We were done. I fed the dog, took a few photos for posterity, and filled out my OSR public land survey as the sun sank below the cloudy horizon. A life lesson was reaffirmed tonight. Never ever give up. Blessed days often come in disguise. Tonight was one of those nights....
Some times it is not about where you are going. It is how you got there. I wouldn't trade these three miserable rainy hours with my dog for any hunt.

Thanks milkjug and bigrock, it is one of my favorite spots. Folks must have missed the small chunk of cut milo we found, bout 10~15 acres worth.

Great story. I've had plenty of those days, just without the happy ending.
Good Hunting.

Thanks Art. Went out in this awesome weather thismorning and scratched out another limit in 30 minutes. I am digging this public honey hole.
