Kayak fishing the Lone Star State...

Gents,

I'm looking to get on a few Toms this season. Does anyone have any pointers or recommendations for public land? I've scouted a little out in Sam Houston National Forrest with only a few tracks to show - not much happening out there. I missed the deadlines for the postcard hunts but I'm considering showing up as a stand-by. Does anyone have experience with this?

I really want to kill a Rio - willing to pay to access land but I'm not really interested in guided "turkey shoot".

Anything helps - thanks.

The best advise I have for hunting public hunting land is get there early. Walk a long distance back to get away from others. And stay as late as you legally can. It's all about putting in time and doing lots of scouting.
