TKF Proposal.
So DD Post on TKF ending, and Neumie's resent rise to TKF leadership made me think of something DD had said. Facebook was killing TKF. Soooo I was thinking what if Josh could transition TKF into a Social media app? Just a thought. It's up to Josh.

Depending on functionality you want it to have... It can easily shoot into hundreds of thousands and more. It will lock you to given platform (Apple, Google, etc). It will make you vulnerable -- e.g. Apple will kick your app off their platform if it doesn't like what your neighbor said somewhere in public.Neumie wrote:Developing an app would cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Self-hosted forum is hard to kill and easy to run. In worst case you just move to another host.

Re: TKF Proposal.
The members have a way of killing discussion on TKF by OP'ing threads that only consist of a youtube link.
The stuff of bulletin boards is discussion, photographs and interaction.
Supporting videos are fine, but offsite links to videos is not the stuff that connects this group and makes us interact.
IMO, Josh should delete threads that are bare offsite youtube links without photos and discussion fleshing out the report.
How about this for fishing on leader below 3" unweighted clicking cigar cork (small Mansfield Mauler)?

I agree with Ron in that the stuff of bulletin boards is what we actually put on the board rather than a link to an external site. I have mixed feelings about auto-deleting such posts though because what Ron Mc and I dislike, some other members may find great use or enjoyment from.Ron Mc wrote:The members have a way of killing discussion on TKF by OP'ing threads that only consist of a youtube link.

I have noticed that the board has become much more active over the past couple of weeks and I hope that continues.

Re: TKF Proposal.
Michael, we can have both - all it takes is the effort to respect us and our time enough to say, here's what I did - we had a great time, and here's a photo (or two, etc.)
I go out of my way to not click on video links, unless it's someone I know my time will be well-spent, like Prof Salt.
Glenn happens to make the extra effort both in video editing quality and when posting them on the forum - always something for everybody.

Re: TKF Proposal.
Agreed... a link to a you tube video is not a fishing report. I know I'm old school but I would rather see a few pics and read a bit about their experience especially if they are a storyteller. By the way where have Cuervo and karstopo been?
Re: TKF Proposal.
I will have to join the “old curmudgeon” group on this one. I, like I assume most on this forum, get on to see what is going on and to hopefully learn something in the process. If there is a post with just a YouTube link I will skeptically click on it. Most of the time it is someone with a GoPro thinking they are a fishing sensation, with no dialogue other than WhooHoo’s . The ones who do master the craft of video and kayak fishing (we know who they are) and teaching in the process develop a following and grow their own channel. I am bad about not posting my trips, primarily because I don’t think I have anything to offer and my pics usually suck! But somebody else’s post that talks about their day of fishing, good or bad, I will read through and look at the pics. Because it is here and I don’t have to leave the site to do it. This is a forum and that’s what forums do. A post that is just using the forum to boost their YouTube and not addressing the members is not doing what forums do.
I also might offer more if there was a easier way to post pics (maybe I’m missing something) but like now I was going to post a pic and remembered I wasn’t log on under tapatalk. I wish I could just go to my photos.

Re: TKF Proposal.
There is Imgur, and even photobucket has returned to sanity under new management.
Takatalk went the way of bad management, as did Picasa and so many photoservers who gave over to porn-link advertisers.
Those of us who waited out photobucket and never paid exorbitant fees are now paying $5/mo for bandwidth and upkeep of our ancient photo databases.
Obviously Josh and others know how to use the built-in attachment server on TKF - I'm not one of them.
Maybe a tutorial thread sticky on its use.
Youtube, here I am driving to go fishing, here I am yelling at my brother - none for me, thanks.

Re: TKF Proposal.
I'm torn on how to approach the posts which are just links; typically to YouTube.
I agree with most that such posts do not create discussion which is the foundation of forums, but merely exist for the clicks to prop up social media presence. This is easily backed up by looking at the past posts which just include a YouTube link.
However, posts which just have links still generate traffic on TKF whether or not anyone replies to the topic.

Re: TKF Proposal.
If there's a problem with it Josh, it's that a long string of such threads pushes active discussion topics down the page to obscurity.
If the people who want to post that way limit all their posts to One Thread, it would be less of a problem and less of a distraction from active threads on the forum.

Re: TKF Proposal.
If it takes less than 5 minutes to peruse through all the new content from an average day, I'm not sure it's necessary to weed out YouTube links if they're relevant to kayak fishing. It's easy enough to right swipe... (or is it left swipe? I never did the Tinder thing)
I'd rather see a YouTube link with tips and how and where it was done than a photo of some dead fish and an exclamation that "we slayed them somewhere in Texas". (That's not to include the helpful fishing reports that include where, when, how and what worked and what didn't. Along with the photos of disasters like people tipping over...)
If I were asked, I'd like to see some real life connections, like kayak/wade tournaments, kayak tryout events, water safety demo's etc. Seems like getting 50 guys together, each paying $20 for entry, along with some sponsors like AKC, kayak rental outfits, bait shops, BassPro and Cabela's, tied in with waterfront eateries would be fun AND help pay for some website management.
On the apps, I like the idea, but not for me. I'm not one of those guys who can type on a 5" diagonal keyboard or read a page on a tiny screen without getting a headache. And the first 10 years of Faceplant, Twatter and MeMeMeTube, I lived in China where they were blocked. So I never got addicted before they revealed their true business model where our private information is the product. I know I'm missing out, but that's okay. If an app can generate some revenue to offset operating expenses, great. Others may enjoy the access and if it comes with tide charts, realtime fishing reports and tells me who from TKF is on the water near me right now... I may even go for it.
Edit: I'd add, that with respect to "pushing posts into oblivion", that's true with the current TKF configuration. And a nuisance. But that's just a format issue. Lots of forums show a dozen or more recent topics as opposed to the 4 shown on TKF.

Re: TKF Proposal.
I think having the option to click on a post or not is a plus. I have learned a lot from watching videos that were posted on here by just posting the video. There are some really good fisherman posting videos on here in this manner. But I also see an occasional video I personally don't find benefit but that doesn't mean someone else might.
It's just a fine line telling someone specifically what they can post.

Re: TKF Proposal.
how much effort is required to write - here's what you'll see and may learn on my youtube
If I borrow a youtube to make a point, I do so with an explanation - on this BR thread, it was to show that Shimano Nasci and Penn Battle 4000 and below don't use main bearings - instead, the main gear rides directly in the plastic side plates:

Re: TKF Proposal.
Glad to see a good discussion. For years I’d post up reports with the photobucket pics for BTB. It was always cool to re-live the experiences. The past few years I’ve gotten into video and what a blast to not only have the pic but the video of the whole experience. I’ve gotten sharks eating my bull red right in front of my boat, bull reds schooling and jumping out of the water and sharks jumping clear out of the water. None of these would have been captured with the picture I used years ago. So YouTube reports are all I do now. Some may like it….some not so much. But primarily I do it for my enjoyment re-living the trip when I’m stuck at work.
Long live YouTube links. Lol. BTW I’m probably the worst editor on the planet for the videos.
