Hobie Sold to Maynard Industries

Huh, didn't know about this. Maynard has no history in the outdoor market, hopefully they keep building on what Hobie has established.

Wow didn't see this coming. Interested to see if the new owners will start taking the somewhat customary steps that many private equity groups take these days- trim down the labor force and start cutting costs to increase profits. Hopefully no changes to the team/staff are made.

Hope this does not go the way of Harley Davidson when AMF took over. Quality went down the tubes.

I suspect they know a good thing and will be hands-off (the article kind of describes this).
That might change if demand drops to the basement, but in the current market, their move looks pretty smart.

I wonder how much of this has to do with Hobie's performance during covid times, or if this deal was long in the making from before.

It has been dang near impossible to get Hobie parts and products for awhile now.

Quote from the article, I think they want the revenue to get back up to speed:

"A priority of the new owner is to ramp up production and Sofikitis revealed that the company is taking on 65 new employees at its Oceanside, California headquarters and ordering additional parts to stay ahead of the supply chain."

Thanks for this shocking news. I've been a Hobie customer (sailboats, kayaks & caps) since about 1980.

Let us hope the product quality doesn't suffer.

Another shocking thought...

Will the Hobie Navy become the Maynard Navy...? Image

Doesn't roll off the tongue or inspire me! Image

Bought by a private equity group means "grow the brand". How? As it states in the article, "... improve the product distribution process" and "... ramp up production...". I'm guessing the dealer network will be expanded or even opening new distribution channels. I would also expect them to leverage the Hobie name into other product lines.

Thanks, Cameradoc. That's my buddy Shoffer who attended U. T. in Austin for college and law school.
I went there for law school. Now we're both in coastal graduate school for "Fishing Studies!" That's more fun than billing hours as lawyers... Image
