Hey guys...Im looking to get back into fishing after 4 years of this thing called real life..lol

just trying to see what everyones thoughts on the Catch 120

Im trying to not spend to much money but something affordable

I borrowed a friend's one time. It's a decent starter yak. Stable with a comfy seat and lots of room. Kinda slow to paddle, but not too bad. Great for backwaters/low wind conditions.

I've never been in one but they look like they are slow and harder to paddle. From what I understand they are what Getz-Some55 said a great starter yak. Kayaks these days don't seem to hold they're value like they used to but the "starter models" like Pelican really don't. For the $799 price point you have a lot better options (IMO). The 2020 Feel Free Moken 12.5 is $799 and that's with a stadium style seat. If you buy used there's a ton of options for a lot less than that.

Once again, I suggest going with a 2nd hand 'yak, and don't get hung up on an exact model. You may even find one that's better, and for less money.

If you shop around, you can find a used kayak for a small fraction of the price of a brand new one, and it won't lose any value if real life sneaks up again and you have to sell it. I have a Tarpon 160, a Pescador 12' and an expedition Sea Lion 17' and I paid $750 total for all 3. How much was that Pelican again?

Of the 3, I was bound and determined to find a Tarpon 140 or 160, so I lucked out there. I just watched Craigslist, and was ready to hop in the car as soon as I was able to contact the sellers, showing up first with cash and a cartop rack... And I'm pretty sure I won't lose money if I do choose to sell them on.

Where are you primarily planning on fishing?

im in corpus christi so basically rockport, ap, and corpus christi area

ive been keeping an eye on craigslist as well just doesn't seem to be much on market at the moment...i guess cause its still summer time

I think Neumie and I would both be pushing our narrow, longer, faster boats in that area, which gives you a bit more range in your fishing days.
Not only summer, but fall's coming and the flats are beginning to turn on.

Follow up. What's your build? How are you going to transport and store it?

The Catch 120 is 11' 8" which is kind of on the short size for a coastal kayak. You're going to be dealing with wind so a longer narrower hull is more beneficial. The ability to add a rudder would be good as well.

$300 less than a new Pelican Catch 120, and a stable fast boat - it's also 3-1/2' longer, which means you'll have to think about storage and hauling, 5" narrower, can't find a spec on how much closer to the water, but $1300 less than retail.

Nice looking yak and price is good (assuming yak has no problems). You can easily haul 15' yak in 5.5' bed of a truck -- I did it to Tarpon 160 few times, nothing happened to it. If you want to feel safer -- build extra support (two beams/pipes next to each other, like ladder) and put yak on it. Or just buy one of those extensions they sell for $150.

Harbor Freight sells a bed extender for $59. It is HF quality but as long as it's hauling a kayak it'll last a while.

yes, a bunch of us have been hauling 14' and 16' boats on bed extenders for 10+ years
They're really easy to single-hand this way,

and you can back up to your garage and slide them out onto sawhorses.

i have not seen this and itll be transported in a new gen tacoma or a 2019 ram 1500

with a pickup, you should be looking at least 14' just for good wind performance at the coast.
Might as well begin with a boat that will make you happy.
