Stake out stick

I know this topic has been brought up plenty of times. I’m wanting to build a couple stake out sticks with fiberglass rods, but I’m having trouble finding them. Looked at Home Depot and Lowe’s and they no longer carry them. Any idea on where to get them? Thanks

The shipping on the rod you linked was pretty comical, $150 on $34 fiberglass rod.

Walmart has some 3/4"x6' solid fiberglass tree stakes in their garden area. I've made a few stake out poles using these and they work well for me. I just used Goop Marine glue and glued a PVC tee to the top and capped each end of the tee with PVC caps then tied paracord to the stake. One end already has a point on it. I found the tree stakes on clearance for around $5.

my buddy found a wrapped- handle/fiberglass-shaft/metal-tip gate hook at a tack shop, for $10 or so - made for lifting gate latches from horseback.
He cut the hook and sharpened the tip for his stake-out pole - he's been using it over 10 years.

Another option would be a cattle show stick. Only downside I can see is most are aluminum shaft, but they have a metal point.

Go to a pawn shop, buy a couple cheap golf clubs with the graphite shafts.

That's what I did. found the longest graphite shaft driver and cut the head off. It ended up being about 3.5 feet long. I think I paid a $1. Walked over to the goodwill store next to JerryB's.

When I bought my T160 at now defunct Kokomo Kayaks (next door to my office), asked him to throw in the stake out pole with my purchase.
I hope that didn't break his back.

I made mine out of a clearance graphite boat fishing rod I picked up at FTU for about $10.
Cut off all the line guides, and epoxied an eye screw to the bottom base of the handle for a tie off point.
Has worked like a champ.

Home Depot garden stake. 8ft long So you can cut it to what length you like. I don’t know about Y’all but sometimes I sink into 3ft of mud so I cut mine to 6’ , epoxied on a PVC T. It has a pointed in and I think cost about $3.

Unless you live in Ohio and can pick up from their warehouse, shipping for 2 of those to Texas was quoted at $213. That's a little steep.

I just have a thing against “fiberglass itchies” Unless you coat it with epoxy or something they will appear. This one is coated with plastic.

I will definitely look at these. Website says my store has 24 in stock. Last time I checked out Lowes or Home Depot I couldn't find these or the fiberglass ones. I'll look again today. Thanks!

yes, UV kills the resin and lets the glass fibers fly - definitely need a gel topcoat on glass rod stock.

to stick the boat down and get out - or to stick the boat and stay in one spot and fish (think coast wind and tide).
Here, we're staked and wading a bar, and casting to the cut bank across a (long ago) dredged channel.
There's a pretty good incoming tide current ripping through this cut, which is also what makes the fishing good.

I’ve used mine in some serious wind and waves with no problems. I’m not sure how you have yours set up but I think the key is to have your attachment point or line adjustable so that you can slide it up or down to decrease leverage. If you have it at the top of a 6ft stake and are only in 1ft that is serious leverage. I also don’t rely on my stake in bad conditions, i’ll Go to my anchor.
