Kayak Stringer Lock that fits on kayak rails?

Post by Rip'n Lip »

Everyone, I was reading this report from Ron Mc http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/foru ... 7#p2280827 and noticed what I'm calling a stringer lock on the rail of his Wildy.

Any idea what this is called and/or where I could find one? Really like the idea.

Thanks,
Steve

I looked at the photo some more and it looks like most of the components are from Schaefer.

hey, my ears are burning
here's about where it starts on the rigging thread - http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/foru ... 8#p2272798
The thing is, unlike rope stringers, the new plastic stringers slide in a Z-cleat, and they're next to impossible to tie a bowline - you need a V-cleat or a Cam cleat to hold your new plastic stringer.

I used a Schaefer small cam cleat with wire fairlead base and plastic saddle (also called a top fairlead).
If you have a West Marine nearby, they'll probably have the Schaefer parts on hand.

It really works like a champ - I'll admit to having a sailor background, and fetish for rigging that works this slick.
It's one-hand instant cleat of your plastic stringer.

You can find the Ronstan version all over ebay for mucho $ - Harken even more - I found the Schaefer on sale when I began my project (was already shopping sail shops to replace needed 9-y-o lines on my boat).

Here is a good ebay buy on the two Nautos parts you would need - ebay from the mfg

next thing is figure how to get it fastened to your rails - I used slidetrax nuts, drilled and tapped to take the EZ-lok 303-008 thread reducers - easy chore for any gunsmith, machine shop. or hobbyist if you have a vise and the hand tools.
Yes, a big project, delighted with the result.

here's the other end of that picture

the other choice is use a Sea Dog small side-entry cleat - mount with the side opening facing your bow, and of course the half fairlead facing the water - they come in L and R

adding one more ps - the really inexpensive way to do this is a plastic V-cleat and separate nylon fairlead - just as reliable, not nearly as slick
