How many kayaks have you owned?
How many kayaks have you owned?
To get to where you are now. Mine has been a progression of wants and needs as I get older and kayaks have progressed in design.
First was a Ocean Cabo tandem. Flipped in on first voyage then sold it at a loss. Then a Wilderness Freedom, kept it for ten years and should have bought it from the beginning. Next was another WIlderness Freedom that I got at a great price just to have as a second kayak. Next was a Hobie Outback, this was in 2004. My wife liked the mirage drive but could not paddle it as the kayak would lean to either side and just go around in circles. She later got a Hobie Sport.
So, to tally up what I had.
Hobie Revolution 13-2
Hobie Outback-1
Hobie Adventure Islander-1
Native Ultimate -1
Native Ultimate with drive-1
Native Versa Board-1
Native Mariner 13-1
Malibu X 13-1
Diablo-1
Ocean Prowler 11-1
Ocean Cabo
WIlderness Freedom -2
WIlderness Tarpon 16'
WIlderness Atak 140
Ordered a Blue Sky 360, waiting on delivery.
My present kayak is a Hobie 13 Revolution with the nice seat.

Re: How many kayaks have you owned?
Aqua terra Prism (1980’s) —- currently on the Matagorda Peninsula
Heritage Marquesa —— currently at friends house
Hurricane 16’ —— sold to uncle
Dagger Blackwater —— gave to a friend
WS Tarpon 140 —- at my house
WS Commander 140 —— at my House
Seems like I’m missing one.
I like the Commander above all the others by a large margin. My Commander is in pretty bad shape, though.

2 - Ascend F128T then upgraded to Hobie PA 14. I'm done.
Re: How many kayaks have you owned?
Started with a Hobie Quest 11. Then moved to a Prowler Big Game, then Prowler 13, then Tarpon 160i.
Then I was completely yak-less for about 7 years. Just last Friday I picked up a used Ascend FS12T. I haven't even used it yet and now I'm already looking hard at a serious upgrade to a "pedal" drive boat.
It just looks so much easier pedaling instead of paddling!

Re: How many kayaks have you owned?
Started in 2003 paddling rentals/friend kayaks (Cobra Navigator, OK Scrambler, Caper, Drifter, and WS T100) before buying my first kayak; a WS The Ride in 2004. Three years later I added a Perception Search 15. Then in 2008 I won a Malibu X-13. In 2011 I added the current gen WS Ride 135. Then in 2013 I add a used Perception Search 13.
Sold the Malibu X-13 in 2010, but I still own the other 4.

Re: How many kayaks have you owned?
I've had so many I can't remember....oh, wait, I only had one kayak. Did have a bunch of canoes, bass boats, jon boats, inner tubes and a floating beer trolly.
Oh, I forgot I at one time had a little bass buster that included a cummins diesel and a fully autonomous harpoon launcher on the front. That was for the big boys offshore but the harpoon launcher kept targeting me so I got rid of it. I'm not sure how it confused me with a whale...unless I am.
WS Ride 135
#2 Son has a WS Tarpon 140.

Re: How many kayaks have you owned?
One. A Perception Pescador 12, now with rudder, upgraded seat and forward flush mount rod holders(great addition!).
I also fish a 12-foot aluminum skiff my Dad bought new in 1959! With a 1961 Johnson 5.5 SeaHorse Twin. Zoom, Zoom!
Those two boats do all the marsh and flats fishing I can withstand.

Re: How many kayaks have you owned?
Forgot one, Native Ultimate Tegris.
Re: How many kayaks have you owned?
By the time I’m done with a kayak, they are pretty used up. Solid oyster rash, handles that have been replaced or need to be, anything that can oxidize has, seats faded and torn, shock cords that have lost the elasticity, etc.
My Commander low seat frame busted through the plastic quite a while ago. It’s okay since I never sit on the low seat. The front handle one stainless screw head has been stripped. The aft shock cording has had it. Lots of wear and tear. I can still transport and fish it, so I’ll keep it until I can’t.
All my kayaks have ended up that way if I have them for long. They eventually end up at some friend’s fish camp or lake. There’s really not enough left in them to mess with selling, but still enough to putter around in small water.

Re: How many kayaks have you owned?
Always heard that if you stick with yaking long enough you'd end up with multiple kayaks. Did not understand why anyone would "need" more than one. Well I've only been doing this 3 years now and guess what - have had three kayaks! Not as impressive as the other long timers on here but well on my way!
Started with an Outback (sold it to Yakety_Yak). Then bought a PA-14 and most recently bought a Compass (have both of these currently). Fun stuff!

Re: How many kayaks have you owned?
Kickingback, Not to worry, the memories I have of over 70 years of kayaking are priceless. Future salt water fly fishing will be from the bow platform of a guide poled power boat. Future fresh water fly fishing will be from a guided river boat or raft. I ain't giving up, just changing strategies.
