Hardware and saltwater-desperately seeking assistance
Doing some routine maintenance on the Slayer today and it occurred to me that despite rinses after every trip, the stupid little split rings on my rudders always need replacing after a season or two.

Any clever solutions thought of by not me?
Or am I doomed to repeat this ritual until Sol expands and engulfs the earth in thermonuclear hell?

Have you tried using aluminum?

I agree. Aluminum or stainless cotter pins. Looks like you don't remove them too often so a cotter pin will work for you here. I had to go to both myself on my Ascend TM parts. You can buy a bunch in a box and use as spares if they break after bending a few times.

Mighty good idea on the aluminum cotter pin clip thing. I’ll grab a few to keep in my kayak first aid kit.

I actually used a paper clip as an emergency fix on another kayak. It’s working so far. True story. Hell, maybe I’ll just stick with that.

Cuervo: The "solution" is to use stainless steel cotter rings for sailboat shackle pins. I buy small parts like that from an outfit called SailCare, com. They have micro blocks to use for anchor trolley use, great bungee cord, Dacron line(no stretch) and everything you need for rigging kayaks. I made my own kayak rudder and bought my stainless cable from them.

Aluminium is better, but it will eventually oxidize too. I suggest good grade stainless steel + regular (once per 5 outings?) application of heavy duty CorrosionX. Apply, wipe off with paper towel; remaining residue will help with corrosion.
Re: Hardware and saltwater-desperately seeking assistance
Cuervo: They call the cotter rings :safety rings" and they are on the catalog page called "Ring Bolts" for some strange reason. $.25 each, 3 sizes. Good supplier.
