Mold smell inside of kayak

Post by krfish »

I can't think of a better way to describe the smell other than that of mold. I always air my kayak out after washing it down. Does anyone know of a way to get the "stale" smell out from the inside of a kayak?

Take a paper towel and pour a few drops of vanilla extract on it and leave it inside the kayak.

Great idea! I was gonna suggest baking soda but I like the smell of vanilla!

I'm sure baking soda would do the trick as well!

Oddly enough, I got this trick reading the instructions on an igloo I bought years ago. Baking soda does absorb smells. Vanilla just makes it smell better

Honestly, I have a soloskiff that has a smelly inside.

I tried everything. A carpet drying blower to dry it out. nothing.

Rinsed it with bleach water. Nope, didn't help.

Ancient Inca ceremony with incense and herbs from all over the southwest. Nada...

It was really stinky... I like to store my gear in there and there is nothing worse than putting on a life jacket that smells like the bottom of a locker room laundry basket...

I'm still hoping for a cure.

I wish you luck...

I don't so much mind the smell, but as you said I hate when I store my gear inside, and it stinks for days. Giving the vanilla extract a try now.

vinegar. Its the best mold and stink remover there is, and the vinegar smell will go away fairly quickly. I keep a spray bottle of 1/4 vinegar to 3/4 water around for all outdoor stinks, including inside my yak. Spray a good mist all over and let it evaporate.

I put my kayak in thick grass where the full weight is supported and mix a batch of Mirazyme inside of it. I dip my PFD, water shoes, and other fabrics in it while it's mixed. Let it sit a few minutes, then start pumping and draining...problem solved.

I do know that Dow Scrubbing Bubbles works wonders on cleaning fishy coolers and the front storage bin on my PA-14 (where I store my fish while on the water). I used to use Clorox but the residual bleach smell was terrible. Tried the Scrubbing Bubbles once and never looked back. No more fish smell! Just wet the surface, spray on the bubbles, scrub a little and then rinse.

This may or may not work for your situation but the stuff works wonders on just about everything (tennis shoes, tires....you name it!).

PS: I also open up my hatches, set a box fan over one of the hatches and let it blow thru the yak for several hours. Does wonders for removing excess moisture (and smell).

Tight Lines!
