Glad you chose what YOU wanted or needed instead of going with the crowd. Some people enjoy or are better at paddling instead of peddling. Upper body strength for paddle and lower body strength for peddle.
Just make sure you are in shape and have fun!!!

Great lesson in trying before buying.

I, like yourself, prefer paddling over pedaling as well. Although I disagree somewhat with kickingback's comment and think with proper paddling technique you use most of your body whereas pedaling is just a leg workout.

My kayak is not a Hobie but it has the Mirage drive. Unless you are a really strong paddler nothing beats a peddle drive in the wind. I do a lot of trolling and the peddle drive does that really well. And even for just holding position in a breeze, again the peddle drive works well.

I bought a Hobie Adventure some years ago just because I didn't have a peddle kayak. I mainly use it for BTB because I don't have to worry about running into anything out there and bending the fins. They are all sliced up from oyster shells when I used to take it in the bays. Nowadays I have to make myself take it out every once in awhile to justify keeping it. It was my first and will be my last peddle yak.

The Mirage drive is a killer on my knees and I can pedal a bicycle with minimal discomfort. I never got so far as buying a pedal kayak, just tried out a friend's Hobie. He has shoulder and neck issues so a pedal drive made a lot of sense. I don't think I would have liked peddling anyway even if it didn't happen to hurt, it just seemed awkward.

I enjoy paddling. Canoes, kayaks. It's part of the whole experience for me beyond just the fishing and not a chore at all. I love paddling up into the wind and chop on an open stretch of water. Overcoming the wind and waves, making good way with each paddle stroke, the breeze in your face, is one of the most enjoyable parts of kayaking.

I love kayaks of all kinds. Never met a kayak that I didn't like. Yet, kayaking, to me, is all about paddling. The mirage drives, the prop drives, and, the motorized yaks are another thing entirely.....,another dimension as it were. They serve various purposes, and, serve them well, but, they just ain't like paddling a long, narrow, swift moving boat through the water.

A somewhat hyperbolized analogy would be the difference between driving a Ford 150 pick up truck as opposed to driving a Porsche roadster. But, that's just me. I know of fishing buddies who adamantly profess that they can't understand why someone paddles a kayak when they have the opportunity to peddle one.

When I bought my first kayak I chose a paddle (Cuda 14) because I didn't want to worry about fin/prop In shallow water (fish mostly flats chasing reds). Since then I've thought about a peddle kayak and have tested several at demo days and think I would consider one if it was truly a hybrid that could be peddled as well as it paddles. I've read write ups about the WS Radar and it might be close.

yeah definitely try before you buy...i rented an outback the other day to go out with my boys. I'm getting old and am having shoulder issues so i though i'd try one out. I gotta tell you it was great. I was able to tow my sons around , pedal all over the place with out issue. AS for physical demands the pedal drive was a minimal work out, if i was paddling i would have been exhausted, especially if i was in my x-factor. Being used to my barge, i'll admit it was easier paddling the outback. I had to try because at first it wasn't too comfortable pedaling. Then i found all the adjustments, seat height, seat back and pedal drive, once i found the right adjustments for everything it was a breeze. In the past the biggest put off to the pedal kayaks has been the price, they're atleast double a good paddle kayak. But now i really don't have a choice, and i'll be looking to get one soon. Was ACK offering any discounts on hobie kayaks at their demo days? i may wait til spring if they are.

I have never tried a peddle kayak, but thought about it when I tore up my shoulder, so I did look at them.

I am a really tall guy and there isn't any means of stretching the system to get my legs into a comfortable place to peddle (a bicycle I can buy a 26" frame and raise the seat). If I was smaller I might like to use one a few times to decide if it's worth the added cost, added weight and added time to the launch and load process. But if not for that year when my shoulder always hurt, I would have never considered a peddle kayak.

I went to the demo days ACK had in Conroe last month. I felt the same way about all of the peddle kayaks. I currently fish out of a tarpon 120 so they all felt a little sluggish and hard too get going...then I sat in a Hobie PA 12. I wish I never stepped foot in that thing. It was amazing. I expected it to be like the others but it the "fin" style drive seemed to be the difference. It was easy to maneuver, fast, roomy and EXPENSIVE. As much as I liked it I'll stick with my tarpon for a while. I can't see spending almost 4k on a kayak.

Getting used to any kayak takes time. Some fit immediately, others not so much. With that said I have to say that it's pedaling all the way for me. On my Outback the seat/mirage drive adjustments were set one way while my PA-14 seat/mirage drive adjustments were totally different. On the Outback my lower back hurt initially. A few trips and some fine tuned adjustments on the seat and viola, no problems at all. For the PA it was raising the seat and then adjusting the mirage drive accordingly and the same thing - am now very comfortable all day. I spend, on the average, 7-8 hours on the water covering some 6-8 miles. More some days and less others. Have friends with paddle kayaks and we all fish together. So would say that trying 'em out first is a very good thing. But you also have to give 'em some time to work the kinks out.

Get what works for you. Just remember you can’t possibly experience every condition in one demo day. Put the yak you’re considering to the test before buying. Try to go out with other members on the forum and use theirs. Or rent from a local dealer that has that option. It’s when you go past that 3rd hour that all the aches and pains start acting up and you realize what a kayak is really about.

Just my .02 so take it with a grain of salt.

Its an individual choice. If folks don't have the money its easy. In my case a Hobie has been just fine. I can peddle all day with no joint pain. Fact is by using the drive, my legs are active, increasing the flow of new blood replacing old in my legs.

my buddy has a new 16' Revo, bought at the same demo, and no paddle boat can touch it - it could be twice as fast and tracks straighter than my 16' Tarpon.

Didn't get a chance to test that one out. It has the mirage drive right? I think that made all the difference. It also looks s little more streamlined than some the the pedal boats I tried.. Nice rig. I said I wouldn't spend the money on a Hobie but I've been really enjoying this kayak fishing and I've spent more money on things I've enjoyed less...lol

Maybe pedal kayaks aren’t to fond of you either. Ever think of that?
