Advice needed for tomorrow

Post by floatsmyboat »

Going somewhere on the mid coast with my dad early tomorrow for a day trip in the
Yaks. We live 2 hours away from anywhere near port aransas so I'm not real sure where to hit up with the heavy sse winds. I was thinking about POC and possibly lighthouse lakes and maybe looking around at Rockport to find a place but I'm not confident in my choice since we don't come down all too often this time of year. Really just looking to get bit without having our trip ruined by the wind. If anyone has any advice, id appreciate if you shared. Thanks!

Sorry about the wind. It's just something we have to put up with this time of the year. You can still hook up and even get on some fish but ***CAUTION*** paddling on a windy day is not for the feint of heart. Pedal yaks are better but it WILL test your endurance. Might I suggest checking out one of the jetties. If water color is good you could score KINGS off the Port A jetty. Good luck.

floatsmyboat: Three launch sites that are sorta sheltered from the south wind: Port Bay Road and Rattlesnake Point Road launch sites, find them on the Aransas Pathways site. The other one is the Fish Habitat launch on Hwy 181/ 35 , just out of Portland, before you get on the Causeway to Corpus. It is commonly called :Porno Flats, as there was an X-rated movie house there in the past. All very good when there is a southwest wind. Catch 'em up!

Thanks guys, i think ill try out the Italian bend area in port bay. Ill probably focus on the flats since low tide is right at daybreak but might sneak into the marsh. Ill be sure to let yall know how it goes

I can't speak as to the Fish Habitat location, but was thinking Port Bay and Rattlesnake Point. Protected and can be really good fishing this time of year.

One thing I tend to do if (and that's a big if) I am paddling in winds; I start out early working into the wind (usually lower speed early in the morning). I work in spurts. Paddle until I am out of wind or see promising fish signs. Anchor and fish, or get out and wade fish for a while. Then repeat that until you get to a point where you want to be. Then work your way back on a slightly different path with the wind in your favor to end your day.

A protected side of a jetty can be good on windy days, but I would not do it in a kayak, but that's just me.

Image got one throwing at the windblown grassline first thing this morning. Right at 20 and a quarter. Caught a few trout in the open water between the launch and italian bend and everything shut down once the rain set in

Good on you for getting out ... and hey, you didn't get skunked so congrats.

One last location for next time is the Wilson cut area on 361, you can hug the South East shore above the parking area and find some fish. It's fairly protected and there's islands as well.
