Best way to transport 12' yak on roof of car?

Post by raruga »

Guys, one of my best friends is wanting to buy a new hobie outback but he doesn't have a truck.
He drives a full size sedan, what is the best way to transport a kayak on roof of a car? And how do you load it on the roof of the car?
Thanks

Get a roof rack or trailer.

Try the Yakima mako saddle and rollers.
It worked well for me.

From my experience I know what NOT to do... PA14 + foam blocks and straps + Ford Edge = purchase of a trailer within 3 months!

Send a PM to Yakety_Yak. He's done this a million times with an Outback and has learned what to do & what not to do.

I would get a roof rack or a trailer. I used the foam blocks for my first yak on my 2009 camry. I ended up buying a truck because I was tired of lifting the yak on there after a long paddle back in and it was damaging the roof of my car slightly. That kayak was a 12' pescador at like 70 lb. Outback would be much heavier.

I've seen people invert a cart like a C tug and put it on the trunk to act as rollers but I didn't do that.

Do a youtube search for the type of yak you want to transport and where in you vehicle. The more specific the search the better.

My experiences:
Don't bother with the foam blocks. (especially if you have a sunroof)
I used the Thule roof racks and they were great. Get the one specifically for your vehicle to prevent damage. I had saddles and I had the rollers. Rollers were the best because I could just lift the nose up to the rollers and then lift the back and just push it in place. Not sure how heavy your kayak is but I agree that you will get tired of lifting it. I have an electric winch mounted to the ceiling in my garage to prevent the extra lifting.
Trailers are great, but storage doesn't always allow them.

Good luck!
