I will be staying in Clute (near Freeport) and fishing the Drum Bay and Christmas Bay area later this week. What are some good tackle and live bait shops in this area? I realize that the good live bait places may not be the best tackle shops. I'm interested in both types of shops, but it's more important that I find a good live bait shop because I'll be coming pretty well stocked with artificials, but I also sometimes like fishing live bait like shrimp on a popping cork. It's also sometimes fun just checking out the local baits and patterns.

Two bait shops as you head into Surfside. One on the left and the other on the right before you reach bridge over the ICW. Names do not immediately come to mind but I am sure someone will chime in. Not sure about any closer to Clute. Mitchell's in Freeport on Velasco St. has frozen bait but I am not sure about any live bait.

Thanks......I found with Yahoo.local 4 shops that look like bait shops on E. Highway 332 before you reach the ICW coming from clute 1) Saltgrass Bait and Tackle 2) Denver Bait Camp 3) Pier 30 bait and tackle and 4) Bridgebait , which actually has a website so I know that at least that one is still open and they say they have live shrimp and mud minnows on their website. I'll just travel down that way and hopefully one will be open and have bait.

Good. Saltgrass is the first one next to the new RV park and private launch...I think. Pier 30 is now Beer 30 and no longer sells bait. The bridge shop is on the right almost under the bridge and the little one in the mock up boat on the left as you head towards the bridge is?
Have fun!

Bucees at the intersection probably has the best tackle assortment.

I always use Saltgrass, they are open 24/7 and always have live shrimp and mullet, for tackle definitely go to Bucees.

Bucees sells tackle? man I wish the Bucees here in League City sold tackle! Although I am spoiled with Marburgers, West Marine, Hookspit, and Academy.

In a pinch, you can usually find a decent selection of terminal tackle at any bait shop you choose.

But there is an Academy store in Lake Jackson. Good selection and decent prices. If you get down there the day before you fish you can find everything you need there except the bait. If you want lures, you're better off there than a bait stand.
