show me your shoes ...

Post by rickh »

I'm 100% flip flop yaker in the river and on the lakes. I'll be going to Port A in two weeks and I know first hand that the oysters are no place for flip flops. About 10 years ago we had to rush my daughter to the ER due to an oyster cut. I also, really can't see myself wearing my wading boots when I'm out yaking.

So what's in? light? comffy? safe? ... as we say in San Antonio "show me your shoes". :-]

No need to risk a vibrio infection or being stuck by a ray. If you wade, wear ray guards, and ray proof reef boots. That way you can focus on fishing, and not worry.

Do you wear them or just keep them in your boat?

I wear my cheap neoprene wading boots...sometimes I push the zipper down for comfort. Or slip them off when it gets too hot. Of course with the sun...nothing is more fun than a good sunburn on the top of your feet!! With the soft bottoms/pot holes we have in our water...you never know when your next step is going to put you knee deep in muck. The last thing you want to do is try and reach into that stuff and get your shoe back! I stopped wearing crocs in my yak due to having to do that twice!

New Balance Trail Runners. They drain well, have traction, lightweight. I paddle and wade the marsh and gig with them. But then again, I do not wade much shell. Sand, grass and mud are my friends.

I like wearing some neoprene booties with the cheap magellan canvas wading boots. The canvas hold up well to the oysters and the neoprene adds cushion for comfort and ptotection from possibly a full cut through

I'm pretty much covered head to toe for various reasons... but i wear my wading boots all the time all day. I wade quite a bit and have found myself stepping off into some shell while in dirty water that I did not see. I have ray guards on while im fishing all the time also. if i see a fish i want to wade up to then i wont have to bother with putting them on. i can see if your in a yak most of the time then a zip on wading boot would be good.

My very first decent pair were the hodgmanns black zip ups. Zipper froze after a while and went with forever lasts predators (lace ups). I wear neoprene socks to help with debris. Haven't had any issues yet. I purchased my boots the year they came out from the Houston fishing show and they've held up well.

These are what mine look like with a little shell abuse... I wouldn't wear anything less protected...

I'm not saying they're the best around... Haven't tried other lace ups, but they've been great for me.

Here's one more.

That Columbia is a sweet shoe, tried them on at the outlets in San Marcos, but if I remember correctly that sole is super soft.

http://www.columbia.com/Men's-Drainmake ... lt,pd.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

has them for $40.00 size 11 and 12 i think.

I had several pairs of cheapies and then I bought the Orvis Zip up wading boot. $85 and worth every penny. Most comfortable that I have had.

What ever you do buy something light in color. They are way more cool than the black. That black absorbs heat and your feet will cook when you are not wading.

No ray guards for me but all the water I wade is clear and very shallow.

X2 on these. Best around.
I wear the black neoprene when in the marshes.

Buddy tore up the Columbias on shell in Galveston.

I keep them on most of the time, I only take them off when I'm relaxing having lunch. I too am covered from head to toe during the day. The only skin exposed to the sun is my finger tips.

I get it now ... I'm usually in trunks and flip flops and coated in spf 50. I'd probably look like a lake/river guy on vacation :)
