Fast Kayaks that won't swamp!
Is there any fast Yaks that a fat boy won't swamp?
I don't mind getting wet, I just don't want to sit in it all day.
Started looking at Malibu x-13 an the x factor. I really like the x13, but I read its more for a light weight. I would take you guys advise on trying them out before you buy but not sure where to demo one.
I'm about 230 (240 after christmas) 6' tall

The Ultimate is a sweet boat....But bring something to get water out of the boat. A quick story for you......One morning before class my buddy and I went fishing.
He took out the Native Ultimate 12 propel
I took out a Hobie Revo
We put in and the wind if I had to guess was like 10-12 mph
Mid way through trip the wind picked up considerably, so did the waves.
My buddy was getting frustrated with the propel because every single wave that hit the bow sprayed him with water.......So we beach at an Island and switch boats and start peddling back....
At this point there was about 3" of water in the boat.
When we made it back to the truck....Lets just say it was a bath tub.
I am guessing if we had gone any further that boat wouldn't of made it back....Luckily we were on a flat so I wasn't scared of sinking the boat but every time a wave came my way it was a balancing act.....
Still the Ultimate's are awesome boats. incredibly stable...I took my g/f out in a 14' tandem and I was standing in the rear fishing, while she was in the front fishing.....As for speed it's quick but it isn't a 160i

Dang where's the pics of me standing in the rental one?smellyhands wrote:I'm about 215 (and 6'5") and my perception search 15 is completely dry. My butt stays dry, the footwells drain very well and it's a very fast yak. It's definitely not a kayak you'll ever want to stand in but it's fast and dry, which were two big things I was looking for.
Neumie stood all the time in his and yes for a big guy with minimum gear the Search is a kick butt yak for speed.

Check out the Stealth 12-14 New from Malibu if you want to stand and fish
with a live well at your feet.
I went back and re-read your post. You are of the same weight and hight as I am. I paddled the X 13 and had no problem with the capacity.
Your best bet is get in one and bring along some items that are of the same weight as the gear you will bring to make a fair comparison. My favorite kayak for fishing is still the Tarpon 160i. I have a Native 14.5 Ultimate, but its an open craft. It fits the bill for me due to where and how I fish. Most of my fishing is standing and sight casting to Reds.
That being said I don't go in choppy waters or off the beach so taking on water is not an issue with me.
If ever in Rockport, you can test out my Native or Tarpon 160.

Big guy fixes...
The Ultimate 14.5 is not meant to be paddled in high wind/wave situations without its bow cover. This accessory makes a world of difference in its seaworthiness. The waves that normally would crash into the boat just roll off.hotpocket wrote:The Ultimate is a sweet boat....But bring something to get water out of the boat. Another dry choice is the Manta 14. When I was 270#, it was the only SOT that gave me a totally dry ride. It is also fast and stable enough to stand up in. MY CHOICE for the SOT for big boys!

At 6' 2" 290, the Extreme is very fast and dry, and the X-factor is somewhat fast and very dry. The Hobie Adventure is extremely fast and only a little wet.
As for the X13, I found it to be the best-paddlin fishing yak I've ever been on; it tracks spectacularly yet is quite nimble. At my weight, yeah, it's wet, but I bet it's great around 220-240. Give it a chance.
good luck

The X-Factor is a great BTB kayak.justletmefish wrote:thanks for all the info guys. I have one more question though. is the x factor a good btb yak
It can't do this
<<<<<<< Like a FnD
But Renfish can't either Sorry CNR
The X-Factor is a better bay kayak than the FnD = it's longer
but works great BTB. Just coming back in the 14' could bite you if it gets rough.
